6thJune,1984:CommitteeRoomNo.10oftheHouseofCommonsoftheBritishParliamentwas
overflowingwithpeople.WewerepayinghomagetoVeerSavarkarduringhisbirthCentenary
Year.Finally,IproposedavoteofthanksandannouncedthattheGreaterLondonCouncilwas
goingto"putupabluecommemorativeplaque1on65CromwellAvenue,LondonN6,thehousein
Highgate,whereSavarkarlivedduring19061910.

Afterwecamehome,wesawonT.V.thefightinginsidetheGoldenTemple,Amritsar.TheIndian
Armyhadmovedin.WhatacoincidenceWhatanguishwouldSavarkarhavefelt?

Dismayedbytheevents,IstartedtowriteabookonthePunjabCrisis.Butasiftherewerenot
enoughproblems,MrsIndiraGandhiwaskilledon31stOctober1984.AllthatIhadwritten
becameoutofdate.AsaMaratha,IwasdeeplydistressedattheaftermathofIndiraGandhi's
death.Therearenowordswhichcanexpressmyrevulsion,horrorandrepugnanceatthesavage
andunbelievablemobattacksonSikhmen,womenandchildrenandtheGurudwarasinmany
partsofIndia,includingregrettablyinMaharashtra.

IleftEnglandforworkingintheFalklandIslandsintheSouthAtlanticOceanon5th
November1984.DuringmytravelonboardtheshipM.V.ENGLANDIwroteatenpagearticle
entitledGodSaveIndia.Afteralongdelayandwithgreatdifficulty,myfriendBhupendraPatelof
Londontypedthearticleandcopiesweresenttomanyfriends.Eventhoughthearticlewasby
thennearlytwoyearsold,itwasverymuchappreciated.Encouragedbytheresponse,Idecidedto
expandandbringthearticleuptodate.Thisbookletistheresult'

LikemostIndianslivingoverseas,Ihavebeenwatchingwithgreatanxietyandconcerntheevents
inthePunjaboverthelastfouryears.MyprofessionalworkandresearchintoTrueIndianHistory
keepmeextremelybusy.IwasdrawnintoresearchinPunjabpoliticswillynilly,whilediscussing
theissueswithmyfriends.Iwasshockedbytheirignoranceandprejudice.Ourkithandkinare
blissfullyblindtorealityjustastheywereintheprepartitiondays.Herearesomeexamplesofour

decidedtocastawayhismortalbodyandleavethisworld.Herefusedtotakefoodfor22daysand

CHAPTERII.FORGOTTENINHERITANCE

Anynationifithastosurviveandprosperneedsacontinuingtraditionofsacrifice.Wehave
witnessedthisfromancienttimeswhenthebonesofsageDadhichiwereusedbyIndratokillthe
demonVrutrasuratoselfimmolationofVeerSavarkarin1966.Sikhshavemaintainedthis
tradition,facedalmostextinctionbutneverlostfaith,showedremarkableresilienceandemerged
triumphantlikePhoenixinthe19thcenturyandsavedournationandprotectedanddefendedour
Dharma.Threehundredyearsago.GuruGovindSinghtooktoswordtodefendourselvesandour
DharmafromthetyrannyoftheMuqhals.HeappealedtotheHindus:"Givemeatleastoneofyour
sonsforourfight."InPunjab,amongmanySanataniHindus,therearoseatraditionthatoneson
fromafamilywouldbebroughtupasaSikh5.Andasheusuallyhappenedtobetheeldestson,
wecametolookuptoSikhsasourelderbrothersandtheydidstandforourprotectioninthetimes
oftrouble.Thistraditionwasinvogueinourlivingmemory.Eveninthe1920s,PanditMadan
MohanMalviyaappealedtoallHindustofollowthistraditionsothatwewouldfightforourfreedom
fromtheBritish.Anditisthistradition,thisspiritthatwestandtolosetoday.

Bypersistentlymaligning,insultingandhumiliatingSikhs,wehavenotjustalienated2percentof
ourpopulationbutwearecommittingnationalsuicide.Itishightimetolistentoandunderstandthe
grievancesofSikhs.Letusbrieflyseehowtheyhavebeensystematicallymaligned,atleast,over
thepast50years.





5.Childlesscouples(SindhisandPunjabis)wouldprayOhGod,giveuschildren.Evenifwe
haveonlyoneson,wewouldbringhimupasaSikh.'



CHAPTERIII.BRIEFHISTORY

EvenbeforetheEastIndiaCompanyhadanyfootholdinIndiaexceptinBengal,astuteand
farsightedBritisherswereawarethattheirruleinIndiawouldendoneday.InhisPrefacetoSir
CharlesWilkinsstranslationofGita,WarrenHastingswrotein1785,"TheGitawillsurvivewhen
theBritishdominioninIndiashallhavelongceasedtoexistandwhenthesourceswhichitonce
yieldedofwealthandpowerarelosttoremembrance."

Justoverahundredyearslateri.e.,in1883,ananonymousEnglishauthorwroteabookentitled
India1983.ItwaspublishedbyThackerSpink&Co.anddepictsdisintegrationofIndiaintoa
numberofpettystates,ateachother'sthroats.Itwasnotjustadreamofasinisterimperialist.The
divideandrulepolicyoftheBritishistoowellknowntoberepeatedhere.

WhentheBritishwereforcedtoleaveIndiain1947,theyofferedSikhsaseparatestate
Sikhistan6,butSikhsflatlyrefusedtoacceptit.Andhaditnotbeenfortheirpatriotismandstiff
resistance,thewholeofEastPunjabalsowouldhavegonetoPakistan.ButonlyVeerSavarkar
acknowledgedthisdebtopenly.NehrunotonlyforgotthisbutshamelesslyremarkedinFebruary
1953thatSikhcommunalismwasresponsibleforthebreakupofPunjab.Thatwasthepervert
mentalityofthemanwhoremainedIndia'sPrimeMinisterfor17years.Wemustneverforgetthatit
wasthesameNehru,whoassuredduringtheearlierelectionof194546thattherewouldbeNO
PARTITION.Patelsaid,"Swordwillbemetwithsword."Gandhisaid,"Partition?Overmydead
body".Andoncetheelectionswerewon,thetrioshamelesslyagreedtopartitionwithoutseekinga
freshmandatefromthepeople,withouttheslightestthoughtbeinggiventothefateofmillionsof
HindusandSikhsofPunjabletalonetotheexchangeofpopulation7.

DidnotNehrusay,"ShouldtheIndianNationalArmyofSubhashChandraBosecrossborderinto
India,Iwouldfightthemwithasword?ButwhentheIndianNationalArmytrialsstarted
(November1945),didhenotputonthebarrister'sgowntodefendthem?Whythesudden
change?Purelyforwinningthe1946elections!!ItiswellknownhowBosewashoundedoutof
CongressPartybyGandhi.AfteritwasannouncedthatBosediedinaplaneaccident,Gandhi
visitedBose'shouse.Noremorse.Pureelectioneering.Playinghavocwithotherpeople'slives
(i.e.,thelivesofourkithandkin)ruiningtheirlivesmeantnothingIndiraGandhiprovedtobeno
different.ShewasafterallNehru'sdaughter.

6.TheBritishwouldhavelovedtodisintegrateIndiaevenfurtherunderthepretextofprotectingtherightsofminorities,if
onlytheyhadthetime.

7.ThetreacheryofthetriowaswithoutparallelinthehistoryofIndia.RajajiproposedacceptanceofPakistaninApril
1942.RajajiformulaofJuly1944clearlymeantpartition.Andyetontherecommendationsofthetrio,Rajajibecame
GovernorofWestBengalinAugust1947andGovernorGeneralin1948.

8.NehruwenttoSingaporeinJanuary1946butontheadviceofMountbatten,hedidnotpayhomagetoINAsoldiers.

TheconceptofAryanslivinginCentralAsia,theirmigrationandconquestofIndia,wereall
inventionsofpoliticallymotivatedBritishscholars.ItallstartedatthemeetingoftheRoyalAsiatic
SocietyofLondonon9thApril,1866.TheChairmanwasViscountStrongfield.Mr.Thomas
proposedthatAryanscamefromArianaofOxus.TheBritishwere,ofcourse,promotingtheir
divideandrulegameAryansVsDravidians,BrahminsVs.NonBrahminsadinfinitum.The
BritishstartedtocountSikhsasseparatefromHindussincethecensusof1871.Ironicallyenough,
SwamiDayanandSaraswatifoundedtheAryaSamajin1875(thoughrejectingtheBritishtheories
butstillbelievingthattheAryanscametoIndiafromTibet).AryaSamajistshaveeversincegotinto
theirheadsthatSikhs(i.e.,Khalsa)arenotHindusandmustbeconvertedtopureHinduism,
althoughtheythemselvesdespisethewordHindu,eventoday'.(Ref.AryaGazette,Satdharma
Pracharakaofthosedays.)

Sikhsdonotbelieveinidolworshipbuttheyhavenohatredforiteither.Andastheyareessentially
derivedfromtheHindus,idolsofRama,KrishnaandotherswereseeninGurudwarasinthe
1870s.OrthodoxSikhsthoughtthatitwaswrongandwhentheyheardthatAryaSamajwasalso
againstidolworship,theyinvitedSwamiDayanandtoLahore.InhisdiscoursesinthePunjab,
SwamiDayanandSaraswatialwayspraisedtheworkoftheSikhGurus.Thisattractedanumberof
SikhstotheAryaSamaj.OneofthemBhaiJawahirSinghlaterbecametheSecretaryofLahore
AryaSamaj.

In1883,SardarBhagatSingh,aSubEngineerofAjmerDivisioncomplainedaboutthe
objectionableremarksagainsttheSikhsmadeintheSatyarthaPrakashofSwamiDayanand.
SwamirepliedthathisopinionhadundergoneachangeduringhisvisittothePunjabandthe
remarkswouldbedeletedfromthenextedition.He,however,passedawayon10thOctober,1883.
Andthesituationgrewworseandworseovertheyears.Theinsultingremarkshaveremained.
Eveninthe1975Englishtranslation,wefind(pp.44246)"TheaimofNanakwas,nodoubt,
goodbuthedidnotpossessanylearning.HewasquiteignorantoftheVedasandthe
SastrasandofSanskrit.....Hewantedtoshowthathehadsomepretensionstotheknowledgeof
Sanskrit....Hecouldneverhavedoneitunlesshewasanxioustogainpublicapplause,
fameandglory.Hemusthavesoughtafterfameorhewouldhavepreachedinthelanguage
heknewandtoldthepeoplethathehadnotreadSanskrit.Sincehewasalittlevain.....Nanakin
hislifetimehadnotmanyfollowers,nordidthesectflourishmuch.Butitisahabitwiththe
ignorantthattheymakeasaintoftheirGuruafterhisdeath,theninvesthimwithahalo(ofglory)
andbelievehimtobeanincarnationofGod.Nanakwasneitherarichman,norwasheoneofthe
aristocracy(sowhat?)andyethisfollowershavewritteninNanakChandrodayaandJanamsakhi
thathewasagreatSaintwhopossessedmiraculouspowers.Itishisfollowerswhodareto
blameforthisandnotNanak....."

ThereisnomentionofeightsuccessorsofNanak,noteventhefearlessGuruTegbahadur.Swami
Dayanandcontinues,GovindSinghwasindeedaverybraveman....Heenjoinedfive'Kakaras'
i.e.fivearticlesallbeginningwiththeletter'K'asthesignsofhisfaithjustlikefive'Makaras'ofthe
VamaMargis,andfivesamskarasoftheChakrankitas.Theyareasfollows:Kesha,Kara,Kachha,
Karda,andKangha."
GovindSinghthroughhiswisdom,startedthepracticeofwearingthesefivearticles.Theywere
veryusefulforthetimeinwhichhelived,buttheyareofnouseatthepresenttime.(Itisstrange
that)thosethingswhichwererequiredtobeusedbecauseoftheirbeingofgreatserviceinfighting
(withtheenemy)havenowcometoberegardedaspartandparcelofthereligionofSikhs.Itis
truethattheydonotpractiseidolatrybuttheyworshiptheGrantha(i.e.,theGuruGrantha)even
moreholierthantheidols.Nowisnotthisidolatry?.....IftheyweretoreadtheVedasorhearthem
beingread,thoseamongthem,whoarefreefromprejudiceandbigotry,wouldnodoubtembrace
theVedicreligion.Itisgreatlytothecreditofthesepeoplethattheyhavedoneawaywithvarious
troublesomeanduselessrestrictionsinthematterofeatinganddrinking.Itwillbeaverygood
thingindeediftheywouldalsobefreefromsensualism,vanityandfalseprideandadvance
thecauseoftheVedicreligion9.SwamiDayanandSaraswatiseemstoemphasizethataSaint
must
(a)haveknowledgeofSanskrit
(b)beabletopreachinSanskrit.

Thisisabsurdandpreposterous.LetuslookattheMarathasaints.Theycamefromvarious
backgrounds.Namdevwasatailor,JanabaiamaidofNamdev,NarahariagoldsmithChokhaa
Mahar(lowcaste)TukaramamerchantSavantaafloristGoraapotter.Noneofthemhad
learnedSanskrit.AndyettheversesofallthesesaintsareequallyreveredbyalltheMarathasjust
asthesameversesofBrahminsaintDnyaneshwar,RamdasandEknath.

Mr.N.V.Gadgil,formerGovernorofPunjab,writes:"ThetenetsoftheSikhGurusappealmoreto
themassesalthoughthebasicideasandbasicphilosophywerenotdifferentfromthegreatVedic
religion."(IntroductiontoEnglishtranslationofGuruGranthbyDr.GopalSingh,1964.)

Dr.ArvindGodboleofBombay(norelationofmine)tellsus,"....GuruNanakwasnotagainst
learningoftheVedas.Heonlydislikedthemererecitationlikeaparrot.Hestated,'justasalamp
whenlightedremovesdarkness,readingoftheVedasremovessinfromone'smindGuruGranth
p.1240).HealsosaysVedaspreachustorecitethenameofoneGod.(Guru.Granth,p.1188).

NanakisextremelydistressedattheatrocitiescommittedbyBabur,the16thcenturyMughal
invader.Helaments,"NooneacceptstheauthorityoftheVedasandtheShastras.Kazishave
becomejudges,Kshatriyashaveforgottentheirduly,foreignlanguageisimposed.Hindus,asthey
shouldhavebeen,havebecomeveryrare!"

Wehavereferredtothe1975editionofSatyarthPrakasa.TheSikhssaythatthefirsteditionof
1882containedmuchmoresevereattacksonSikhGurusandSikhfaith.

ItisdeplorablethatSwamiDayanandmadehisremarkswithoutstudyingtheGuruGranthanda
studyofthelivesoftheSikhGurus.Itwasdiabolicaltocomparethefivekakaraswiththefive
makarasoftheVamamargis.TherewerefewmenlikeLalaAmolakRamMunsif,whohadrealised
this,feltsorryandapologised.Buttheyremainedinminority.Attheeleventhannualsessionat
Lahoreon24thand25thNovember1888,PanditGuruDuttandPanditLakhRamcontinuedtheir
attacksontheSikhs.ThediscussionsofLalaMurlidharandSwamiSwatmanandaaddedfuelto
fire.AlargenumberofHindusfeltdisgustedandheldaprotestmeetingon2ndDecember1888in
BaoliSahib,Lahore.LalaNandGopalwasinthechair,thespeakersbeingLalaLadliPrasad,Bhai
JawahirSingh,BhaiDitSingh,andDr.NarayanSingh.Fromthenon,AryaSamajcontinuedits
vendettaagainsttheSikhs.AryaSamacharpaperofLahoreoncewrote

In1934,Prof.GulshanRaiwrote"Forthelast50yearsAryaSamajridiculedandabusedSikh
Gurus.Imustadmitthatweourselvesaretoagreatextentresponsiblefordrivingthe
SikhsoutoftheHindufold.TheywereoursavioursintheMughalperiodandwehaveshown
ourgratitudebyridiculingthoseGuruswhoseteachingsenabledthemtorescueusfromforeign
tyrannyofPathans..."

ManypeoplewereattractedtoAryaSamajbecauseitsponsoredandencouragedmarriagesof
widowsandpreachedremovalofuntouchability.AryaSamajalsostartedthemuchneeded
Shuddhi(reconversion)movement.ButinsteadofconcentratingonChristiansandMuslims,they

decidedtoconcentrateonconvertingSikhsbacktoHinduism.(Whataheightofabsurdity!:)They
cutthehair(kesha)andthebeardsofSikhsintheopenandinpublicplaces.Andthisnaturallyled
touglyconfrontations.ManySikhsstillrememberhowtheiryoungboysusedtocomebackhome
fromschoolswiththeirhaircut.WhatisbeingcalledHinduSikhconflictis,infact,AryaSamajSikh
conflict.

AryaSamajwasanecessityofthetime.ItpreventedthespreadofrotsetinbytheBritishsystem
ofeducationandresistedtheonslaughtofMuslimsandChristians,butbyharbouringfoolish
notionsaboutSikhs,ithasdoneenormousdamagetoHindusocietyatlarge.Itishightimefor
themtoconcentrateonreconversionofMuslimsandChristianstoHindufoldbytheir
Shuddhimovement.Thisistheneedofthetime.In1947,Muslimswere5%ofIndia's
population.Today,theyare11.35%.Needwespelloutthedanger?OnepartitionofIndiawas

CHAPTERVARYASAMAJANDTHECONGRESSPARTY

NofollowerofSwamiDayanandcouldbeafollowerofGandhi(orNehru).Butthelureofpower
inducedthemtoplaythedubiousdoubleroleofbeingAryaSamajisandCongressitesatthesame
time.In1924,GandhimadeanunprovokedattackonAryaSamajtopleaseMuslims.Hepublicly
denouncedtheAryaSamajforitssupposedsinsofomissionsandcommissions.Itwasanutterly
unwarranted,recklessanddiscreditableattack.HedenouncedSwamiDayanandasanarrow
mindedperson.

SwamiShraddhanand,anAryaSamajleader,haddoneamarvellousjobofShuddhire
conversionofMuslims,especiallyMalkanaRajputstoHinduism.ThisangeredMuslimsbecause,
accordingtotheirpreaching,conversionofHindustoIslambyeventhemosthideousmeanswas
perfectlyjustifiable,butreconversionofMuslimstoHinduismbypersuasionhighlyobjectionable.
OnefanaticcalledAbdulRashidkilledSwamiShraddhananda.AndimmediatelyGandhiappealed
thatBhaiAbdulRashidshouldnotbehanged.(YoungIndia,6January,1927).

In1929,someMuslimsofLahorewroteabookletentitledKishanTenGitaJalaniPadegi,agross
insulttoHindus.Rajpal,anAryaSarnaji,becamefuriousandheretortedwithhisbookletRangeela
RasoolbasedonthesexlifeofProphetMohammad.Muslimswerenotusedtosuchtitfortat.
TheyhadallalongconsideredittheirprerogativetoinsultHinduswithimpunity.Ilamdeenandtwo
otherMuslimgoondaskilledRajpalforwhichtheywerehanged.Hindustookoutahuge
processionandcrematedDharmaveerRajpal.NowGandhisteppedin.InYoungIndiahewrote
"Rajpalwasjustanordinarybookseller.HewroteabookletwhichmadeMuslimsangryandasa
resulthewaskilled.WhatheroicdeedhadhedonetocallhimaDharmaveer?Hehadsoldallhis
booksanddidnotsufferanylosssowhatsacrificedidhemake?"ButtheAryaSamajiscontinued
torevereGandhi.

In1937,BhaiParamanandraisedthequestionofHinduwomenandgirlsbeingkidnappedby
MuslimsintheNorthWestFrontierProvince.Insteadofcondemningsuchacts,Dr.Khansaheb
saidintheCentralLegislativeAssembly,"Ohthisisjustanordinaryquestionofboyschasing
girls."Congressmembers,whowerepresentintheAssembly,shamelesslylaughedandnodded.
SavarkarcondemnedthoseCongressitesashizrastransvestites(menwhodressanddisguiseas
women).ButAryaSamajisneverleftthefoldofsuchCongressitestheykeptquiet.Savarkar
condemnedtheircowardiceanddoubledealingduringapublicspeechatAyodhyaon4thApril
1938.

InJune1944,SatyarthPrakasha.theholybookoftheAryaSamajwasbannedbyMuslim
LeagueGovernmentofSind.ButAryaSamajiskeptmumsoasnottoupsetGandhi,whose
appeasementofJinnahandtheMuslimLeaguewasataveryadvancedstage.

WecannotgointothedetailsoftheIndianpoliticsof193847herebutwemustrememberthatthe
partitionofIndiatookplacebasedonthecensusof1941,theverycensusGandhiNehru&Co,
advisedHindusnottotakepartin(justastheyhadadvisedin1921and1931)So,whereasinthe
1881censusHinduswere55%inthePunjab,inthe1941censustheirpercentagewentdownto
47%thusfacilitatingmuchlargerareagoingovertoPakistan10.AndwhatdidtheAryaSamajdo?
TheyacceptedtheadviceofCongressandboycottedthecensusandthosewhotookpartinthe
censusrefusedtocallthemselvesasHindusandgotregisteredasAryas11.Theywerereallyblind
eventotheirownsurvival.Needlesstosaythattheysufferedterriblyduringpartition.Buteven
thentheydidnotbecomeanywiser,andafterindependenceandexodusofMuslimsfromEast
Punjab,AryaSamajreneweditscampaignofanimosityandridiculeagainsttheSikhs.Inother
provinces,AryaSamajsimplysignifiesthosebelievingintheimportanceoftheVedas,quitea
harmlesspursuit.ButinPunjabitisquitedifferent.

CongresspartywascommittedtolinguisticReorganisationofprovincesafterindependence.Arya
Samajonceagainplayedmischief.Inthe1951censustheyinducedPunjabiHindustoregisterthat
theirmothertonguewasHindiandnotPunjabi.Thisisalmostincredibleandunbelievable,butisa
fact.Peopleeverywherearetryingtopreservetheirmothertongue,notdisownit.Canyouimagine
anyGujaratisayingthathismothertongueisnotGujaratibutHindi?ButtheinsanityofArya
Samajisknewnobounds.TheirleaderLalaJagatNarayanwasthesecretaryofPunjabCongress
Party.AryaSamajispreventedtheformationofPunjabispeakingPunjab.(Andatthisstagewhat
weremereprovincesevenundertheBritishbecameStatesunderNehru,boundariesbecame
borderspromotingfurtherdisintegrationofIndia12.

SikhshadnoreasontodisowntheirmothertonguePunjabi.Whyshouldthey?Theyarejustas
proudofPunjabiasIamofmymothertongueMarathi.Whenin1956therewasTamilspeaking
Madras(TamilNadu),KannadaspeakingKarnataka,whyshouldnottherebeaPunjabispeaking
Punjab?Theylegitimatelyasked.ButbecausePunjabiHindusdisownedPunjabi,theagitationfor
PunjabiSubabecamethesoleresponsibilityofSikhs.AndIndianseverywheregottheimpression
thatSikhsweredemandingaseparatestateSikhistan.Thus,withoutspendingasinglepenny,
AryaSamajsowedtheseedsofmistrustinthemindsofunsuspectingIndiansagainstSikhs.

Sikhshadtostrugglefortenlongyears(19561966)togetthePunjabiSuba.Theyquiterightlyfeel
thatwhatisgrantedtootherIndiansasaright,Sikhshavetofightforit.Whentheirmagnificent
contributioninthe1965IndoPakWarcouldnotbeignored,PunjabiSubawasatlastformedin
1966.Buteventhatwasnotdoneinastraightforwardmanner.Chandigarh,thecapital,becamea
UnionTerritory.TheheadworksandhydroelectricpowerstationsweretakenoverbytheCentral
GovernmentandsomePunjabispeakingdistrictswereexcludedfromPunjabiSuba.Onceagain
Sikhshadtostartthestruggle.Behindtoday'stragedyliesthebitterstoryofthelastthirty

years.ThementalityofNewDelhiisthandakarakekhana(Coolitandeatit).Lettheproblems
dragon.VasantraoNaik,formerChiefMinisterofMaharashtraoncesaidopenly,"HowdoIsolve
theproblems?Ijustdonothing.Theproblemisboundtogoaway"i.e.,peopleareboundtogetfed
upwithagitationorgetusedtoputtingupwithdifficulties.

WhatisworseinthecaseofPunjabisthatnoweverySikhisperceivedasaguntottingextremist
andatraitor,asecessionist,whocannolongerbetrusted(Imprint,June1984).Onthree
separateoccasionswhenagreementwiththeAkaliswasinsight,Mrs.Gandhiwithdrewatthelast
moment.WhentheAkalissawthatprolongedpeacefulstruggleyieldednoresults,talkswithIndira
Gandhileadtonowhere,governmentassuranceswereneverfulfilled,asenseoffrustration,
helplessnessandbitternessmusthavesetin.Theextremistswereboundtotakeoverandthe
moderateshadtoshifttoextremisminordertomaintaintheirpositionandremainasleaders.
ManywellknownpersonslikeVMTarkundeformerJudgeofBombayHighCourt,haveremarked
IfBhindranwaleisarrestedLongowal,BadalandTohracaninfluencethemoderateopinionand
negotiationscanbepeacefullyconcluded.ButthiswouldstrengthentheAkaliDalandthatis
preciselywhatIndiraGandhiwouldnotallow.NomatterwhattheconsequencesforIndia.

ThepoliticsoftheCongress(I)wasaimedatweakeningtheAkalis.ZailSinghwastheChief
MinisterofPunjabduring197277.Unlikethepreviouschiefministers,hecamefromRamgaria
(artisan)casteandnotthemajorityJatcaste.Inordertowidenhispowerbaseandweakenthe
Akalis,heencouragedtheactivitiesofBhindranwaleandhisultraorthodoxintolerantfollowers.
AkaliJanatacoalitionwasinpowerduring19781980.InordertocreateariftintheAkaliDal,a
newfactioncalledDalKhalsaledbyBhindranwalewasstartedwithblessingsofZailSingh,Indira
GandhiandSanjayGandhionApril13,1978.Intheyearfollowing,somepolicemeninPunjab
wentonstrikeandweredismissed.Duringtheelectionsof1980,ZailSinghpromisedtotakethem
backifCongres(I)returnedtopowerthatpromisewasfulfilled.Wecanimaginewhatkindofpolice
forcePunjabhad.

WithhismastersZailSingh(thenUnionHomeMinister)andIndiraGandhifirmlybackinpower,
BhindranwaleopenlyattackedhisopponentstheNirankaris.TheirleaderBabaGurubachan
SinghandhisaidewereshotdeadinDelhion25thApril1980.Thekiller,carpenterRanjitSingh,
escaped.Allthe20personsagainstwhomwarrantswereissued,eitherbelongedtotheJathaof
Bhindranwaleorwerehisrelativesorassociatesandwerehidingunderhisprotection.Organised
politicalmurderswerenowappearingonthescene.

Oneyearafterthisevent,awellknownjournalistwrote"ThoughtheCentralBureauof
Investigation(CBI)hassolvedthemurdercase,itisalmostcertainthatthekillerswillneverbe
arrestedbecausetheyareallegedtobeintheprotectionofBhindranwale.Besides,theState
policeisnotpreparedtoinvolveitselfinthecasebyarrestingtheculprits.Repeatedpleasbythe
GovernorofDelhitothePunjabChiefMinisterMr.DarbaraSinghandtheletterswrittenbythe
directorsofCBItothePunjabGovernmentforhelphavebeenofnoavail.ThedirectorofCBI
wrotetoStateGovernmentabouttendaysagourgingittohelptheCBIbyarrestingtheculprits
andtakingawaytheirarms.ButtheStateGovernmenthasnotevenacknowledgedtheletter.The
presentLtGovernorofDelhi,Mr.S.L.KhuranahasagainwrittentothePunjabChiefMinister
pleadingforthearrestofthesuspects.

TheCBIhasalmostcompletedtheinvestigationandpersonswhoaresuspectedinthiscasehave
beendeclaredasproclaimedoffenders.ItwasontheordersofIndiraGandhithatthemurderers
werenotarrestedordisarmed."Andexactly3yearslater,shehadtheaudacitytosaythat
shehadnoalternativetoarmyaction!!

Sometimein1980,GovernmentofIndiaissuedanorderthatrecruitmentintothearmedforces
wouldfromnowonbeonthebasisofthepopulationofindividualstate.AndthusasSikhsareless
than2%ofIndia'spopulation,theirpercentageintheArmedForceswoulddropsharplyfrom
15%tolessthan2%.Thisistheheightofabsurdity.Gujaratisare5%ofIndia'spopulation.Arewe
goingtoseeIndianArmywith50,000Gujaratisoldiers?Differentpeoplehavedifferentattributes
andthesemustbeutilisedforthecountry'sgood.Sikhsdonotclaimtobetheonlymartialracebut

aslongastheymakeexcellentsoldiers,theyshouldbeemployedassuch.Itisonlyafterthis
GovernmentorderthatwehearaboutKhalistan.

InMarch/April1981,onthedayofBaishakhi,extremistsofDalKhalsaopenlydemanded
Khalistan.G.S.DhillonandJ.S.Chauhanwerepresent.ImamofDelhiJamaMasjidgavehis
blessings.(Whywasheneverarrested?).IndiraGandhihadsoughttheblessingsofthesame
Imamforher1980electioncampaignandyetshehadtheaudacitytosaythattherewasreallyno
alternativetoarmyactioninAmritsar!!!

ThreemonthsafterthedemandforKhalistanwasmadebyafewfanatics,Bhindranwale
comfortablytookshelterintheGoldenTemplethoughIndiraGandhiandZailSinghtooknoaction
againsthimorhismenafterthemurderofBabaGurubachanSinghinApril,1980.AryaSamajhad
provedtobeimpotent.On9thSeptember,1981,LalaJagatNarayanwasshotdeadnear
Ludhiana.NachharSinghwascaught.HeconfessedthatoneofhisassociateswasDalbirSingh,
proclaimedoffenderinBabaGurubachanSinghmurder.TheotherassociatewasSwaranSingh,a
relativeofBhindranwale.WemustrememberthatLalaJagatNarayanwasanAryaSamajiandstill
SecretaryofCongressPartyinPunjabandwasoneofthoseleaders,whoin1951,induced
PunjabiHindustofalselydeclarethattheirmothertonguewasHindiandnotPunjabi,andcreated
theproblemofthelast30years.

LalaJagatNarayanhadearlieropposedthenamingofaroadinAnandapurafterGuruGovind
Singh.HeopposedthenamingofDelhiAmritsarExpressastheGoldenTempleExpressand
opposedtheideaofgrantingholycitystatustoAmritsar.
ItwasthedutyofPunjabGovernmenttoarrestBhindranwale.ButtheChiefMinisterDarbara
SinghshowedgreatreluctanceandallowedBhindranwaletodictatetermsandwhenhegave
himselfupon19thSeptember1981,17Akaliswerekilledinmobviolence.Withindayshewas
releasedonIndiraGandhi'sorders,withoutanybailorbond.

Bhindranwalehadnowbecomeahero.ByIndiraGandhi'sblessingshewasabovelaw.He
couldliterallygetawaywithmurder.Hevisitedotherprovincestocollectfundsforhiscause
andinDelhievenmetZailSinghandButaSingh.On29thSept.1981,DalKhalsamembers
hijackedanIndianAirlinesBoeing757toLahore.ButaslongastheyweakenedtheAkalis,Dal
KhalsahadtheblessingsofIndiraGandhiandZailSingh.AndyetIndiraGandhihadtheaudacity
tosaythatshehadnooptionbuttosendintheArmyintheGoldenTemple!!!

InDecember1981,thenewchiefofNirankaris,BabaHardevwantedtomakeadealwiththe
Akalis.Nirankariswoulddeletetheoffendingpassagesintheirholybooksinexchangeforpeace.
ButChiefMinisterDarbaraSinghsteppedinandwreckedthedeal.Congress(I)werenot
interestedintranquillityandsanityinPunjab.





CHAPTERVIIPUNJABPOLITICSTHEMISCHIEFMAKERS

On26thApril,1982,severedheadsofsomecowswerethrowninfrontoftwoHindutemplesin
Amritsar,anactwhichwasdenouncedbyallSikhorganisations.DalKhalsaclaimedthe
responsibilityandwerecompletelyisolated.AtthattimePunjabGovernmentcouldhaveacted
firmlyagainstDalKhalsa.ButhowcouldtheyallowanyeasingofpressureontheAkalis?Itwas
laterdiscoveredthatthecowswerealreadydeadandnotslaughtered.Andthatactwascarriedout
bysomeagentsinthedark.ButinretaliationHindusthrewbiddis13andbrickbatsattheGolden
Templeinbroaddaylight.Whydidthepolicenotpreventthisincidence?Sixmonthslater,
Congress(I)startedraisingaforceofPunjabispeakingnonSikhstomaligntheAkalis.Themen
wouldundergoacrashprogrammeoflearningGurubaniandGurumukhi,growingbeardandlong
hairsoastomakethemindistinguishablefromtheSikhs.Aftertraining,thesemenweresentto
PunjabtoinfiltrateintoGurudwaras,AkaliranksandtheSikhorganisationsandencourage

extremism.Theyweretoincitehatredandcreatecommunaltensions,writethreateningletters,
carryoutactsofbankrobberies,sabotage,desecratingreligiousplaces,invokestrongpolice
retaliationduringdemonstrations,arsonandlootingalldressedupasSikhs.Congress(I)being
inpower,theyhadimmunityfromprosecutionandSikhswouldgettheblame.(TimesofIndia,26
February,1984P.T.IpressreleasefromAmritsarof23Dec.1983U.N.Ipressreleaseof
26Feb1984throwsomelightonthissubject.)

DuringtheAsiadGamesofDecember1982,ascarewascreatedbysuchagentprovocateursand
itwasexploitedbyCongress(I)GovernmentofHaryana.EverySikhlivinginDelhiorproceeding
toDelhiwashumiliatedforwhichtherewasnoneed.MostSikhswouldhaveunderstoodtheneed
forsecurityandagreedtosearchesandrestrictions.ButtheattitudeofHaryanaPolicewas
extremelyhighhanded.Evenwomenandchildren,oldandsickwerenotspared.EverySikhwas
treated,likeasuspectedterrorist.SomeSikhshadcomefromAmericaandCanadatoshowtheir
grandchildrenthelandoftheirforefathers.TheyweresentstraightfromDelhiAirporttojail.This
causedmuchresentmentandbitterness,helpedtheextremistsandhotheadsandmadeit
impossibleforthemoderatestoargue.Infact,everyactionofIndiraGandhiandherpartywas
calculatedtoencouragetheextremists.WhatJagjitSinghChauhan,GangaSinghDhillonand
JarnailSinghBhindranwalefailedtodowasachievedbytheHaryanaPolice.



13.Sikhsmaydrinkbutneversmoke.Throwingofbidis(handmadecigarettes)attheGolden
TemplewasthushighlyinsultingtoSikhs.



CHAPTERVIIIMURDERS,BOMBSANDTERRORISM

On25thApril1983,AvtarSinghAtwal,Deputy.InspectorGeneralofPunjabPolicewasshotdead
asheemergedfromtheGoldenTempleat11.00a.m.Themurdershockedthenation.Itwas

Afteranumberofsecretdiscussions,Atwal,adevoutSikhleftforGoldenTemple.Tohushupthe
matter,PunjabGovernmentawardedRs.3lakhstoMrs.Atwal.Itistruethaton29thApril1983,
Mr.P.C.Sethi,UnionHomeMinister,gaveanultimatumofoneweektotheGoldenTemple
managementcommitteetosurrenderthemenwantedforvariousoffences,whowerethenhiding
intheGoldenTemple.Butnothingcameofhisthreat.Why?

On25thJune1983,abombdamagedtheofficeofCongress(I)inChandigarh.Thismayhave
beentheworkoftheirownagents.ByOctober,IndiraGandhichangedhertactics.TheState
GovernmentwasdismissedandPresident'srulewasimposedonPunjab.Butitbroughtnochange
inthesituationasthechangeoverwasamerewhitewash.Justthreeweekslater,Sealdah
ExpressfromCalcuttawasderailednearAmbalakilling17peopleandinjuring133.Sikhswere
blamed.InOctober1983,andFebruary1984,someinnocentHindusweregunneddown.These
senselesskillingsbroughtequallysenselessreactionbyHindusofHaryana.Between14thand
21stFebruary1984,ontheGrandTrunkRoadfromDelhitoAmbala,Sikhswereremovedfrom
busesandbeatenup.TheirKeshaswereclippedandtheirturbansburnt.Evenwomenand
childrenwerenotspared.InHaryana,Sikhswerebeatentodeath,draggedoutofGurudwarasand
lynched.Onlyonthelastday,HaryanaGovernmentgave'shootatsight'order.Itissurprisingthat
on14thFebruarycurfewhadalreadybeendeclaredinsixmajorcitiesofPunjaband'shootat
sight'orderissuedtopolice.WhydidtheHaryanaGovernmentwatchthecarnageforseven
days?

InMarch1984,LongowalandAkalisclaimedthatmenmasqueradingasSikhs,werecarryingout
terroristactsandSikhsweregettingtheblame.DuringMarchandApril1984,fivestudentsofthe
famousDnyanPrabodhiniInstituteofPunevisitedPunjab.WritinginManoosweeklytheysay,".
CentralReservePoliceForcemensurroundedtheGoldenTemple.Policewithhelmetsandmasks
arecoveringeveryinchofAmritsar,butnoSikhpolice.Andwherepolicewerenotseen,wesaw
Nihangs.HousesaroundtheGoldenTemplehavepolicewithmountedmachineguns."Butstill
therewasnoendtomurders.OnMarch28,HarbansSinghMachandawasshotdead.Hewas
presidentoftheDelhiGurudwaramanagementcommittee,andhadcalledfortheexpulsionof
BhindranwalefromtheGoldenTemple.ThenextdayDr.V.N.Tiwariwasshotdead.Hewasa
learnedmanandwastippedtobethenextViceChancellorofthePunjabUniversity.Hewas
amongthefewtoprankingHindusinPunjabwhoopenlydeclaredPunjabiastheirmothertongue
andaskedotherHindustodothesame.HemadeasurveyoftheresidentsofChandigarhand
cametotheconclusionthat95%ofthemspokePunjabiintheirhomesandbazarsbutwhenit
cametocensus,saidthattheirmothertonguewasHindi.Forhisacademicmerit,hewasgiven
saropaintheGoldenTemple.SowhyshouldSikhsbeinterestedinkillinghim?Onthecontrary,it
isallegedthatPunjabUniversityhasbeendominatedbytheAryaSamajisforacenturyandthey
didnotwantDr.TiwaritobetheViceChancellorofthatUniversityashewouldnotbetheirstooge.
Moreover,heexposedtheirmischievousinducementtoPunjabiHindustodenythatPunjabiwas
theirmothertongue.

On2ndApril1984,some40minorrailwaystationsinPunjabwereblownup.On9thMay,Giani
PratapSingh,aged85,formerheadpriestofAkalTaktwasshotdeadinAmritsar.Hewas
outspokenabouttheantisocialelementswhohadtakenrefugeintheGoldenTemple.Threedays
later,Rameshchandra,sonofLalaJagatNarain,waskilledinJullunder.Thus,despiteseveralacts
andremedies,lawlessnesswasrampantinPunjab.WehavePreventiveDetentionAct,
MaintenanceofInternalSecurityAct(MISA),AntiInsurgencyAct,NationalSecurityAct.Infact,
wehavemoresecurityactsthaninmanydictatorships.Sowhywasthesituationallowedto
dragonforsolong?Theanswerissimple.ItsuitedMrs.Gandhi'selectionchances.It
createdanimpressionthat'thereisaseriouscrisissituationisverygravecountryisfacing
anotherpartitionweneedastrongmindedperson.Towhomwecanturnto?OnlyMrsGandhi.So
rallyaroundher.'Evenherstaunchopponentsforgotthatthesituationwascreatedbyherselfand
said,"Thoughwedonotlikeher,donotapproveofherpolicies,wearesolidlybehindherwhenit
comestoPunjabproblem.Wewouldsupportherwholeheartedly,ifsheweretodeclareastateof
emergencyorevenmartiallaw."Mrs.Gandhiwasverycleverindeedinmanipulatingthesituation
toherownadvantage.




CHAPTERIX.Mrs.GANDHI'SFATALACTION

Between30thMayand2ndJune1984,therewasamassivebuildupofarmyinPunjabandwhat
followedtookplaceevenwithoutdeclaringastateofemergencyinPunjab,letalone
declaringtheMartialLaw.On2ndJune,PunjabwascompletelycutofffromtherestofIndia.It
wasdeclaredarestrictedareaundertheForeigners'(RestrictedAreas)Order,1963,fortwo
monthsaridwaslaterextendedto2ndOctober1984,andforeignnewsreporterswereexpelled.
3rdJunewasGuruArjundev'smartyrdomdayand4thJunewasPanchami.HundredsofSikhs
gatherforthesefewdaysintheGoldenTempleandotherGurudwarasinAmritsar.On3rdJune,
pressrestrictionswereimposedunderSection2ofPunjabSpecialPowers(Press)Actof1956,
andextendeduptoendofSeptember1984.Intheearlyhoursof5thJune,IndianArmymovedin,
thustrappingthousandsofinnocentmen,womenandchildren.Whatfollowedistoogruesome
todescribe.Onecangetsomeideaofthehorrorfromcertainpertinentpoints:

CHAPTERXTHEDANGERSAHEAD

ThefightingintheGoldenTemplewasoverinafewdaystimeandthatshouldhavebeentheend
ofthetrouble.Butohno!Justfourweekslater,byaPresidentialdecree,Punjabwasdeclareda
'terroristaffectedarea'forsixmonthsandon25thJuly1984,specialcourtsweresetup.Punjab
wasdividedinto3zones,eachwithaspecialcourt.Onusofproofwasplacedontheaccused,
trialswouldbeheldincamera,identityofwitnesseswouldbewithheld.Andthusbytheirown
admission,IndiraGandhi,ZailSingh&Co.havecreateda'NorthernIreland'atourdoorstepand
thattooonavulnerableborderwithourarchenemyPakistan.

ThetimingoftheattackontheGoldenTempleseemstohavebeencalculatedtohavetwoeffects
viz,

(a)Tocausemaximumdamage,casualtiesandsuffering.

(b)TocreateextremeuneaseamongtheSikhsoldiersandincitethem.Andoncetheyrebelor
desert,declarethattheSikhsoldiersarenotreliableandshouldnolongerberecruitedinthe
IndianArmy.

IndiraGandhisucceededonboththecounts.EightthousandSikhsoldiersarenowsaidtobe
languishinginIndianArmyjails.OtherSikhsoldiersaredisillusionedanddispirited.Sikhofficers
tooareshatteredbytheeventsof1984."Whatisthepointinwinningamedalforbraveryifyou
areliabletomobattacksatanytime,atanyplaceandwhenevenyourwomenandchildrenwould
notbesparedsimplybecauseyouareaSikh?"MajorJoginderSingh,thefirstofficertodiein
NEFAduringthe1962warwiththeChinese,SardarGurubakshaSingh,whosmashedthe
Sargodharadarcentrewithhisplaneanddiedinthatmissioninthe1965warwithPakistanand
manyothergallantmenwouldnolongerfindanysuccessors.

Aftermorethanadecade,about250officerscapturedbyPakistanduringthe1971Bangladesh
wararestillinPakistanijails.CoulditbethatmajorityofthemareSikhsandhenceIndiraGandhi
couldnotcareless?(IndiaToday,29thFeb.1984,p36).

IndianArmywasonceadmiredasoneofthefinestintheworld.AfteritsdeploymentinPunjab,it
hasbeenreducedtotheleveloftyrannicalarmiesofthepettydictatorsofSouthAmerica.

IncaseofanotherwarwithPakistan,howcantheIndianArmyexpectany
cooperationfromSikhcivilians?AndSikhsaboteurswouldbeseekingrevenge.Accordingto
GovernmentofIndiasownadmission,sixarmydivisionswererequiredfortheBlueStarOperation

ago,RSSbashingwastheorderoftheday.AfterSanjayGandhigotkilledinanaeroplane
accident,oneMemberofParliament,whowasanxioustojoinCongress(I),accusedRSSofbeing
responsiblefortheaccident.IndiraGandhididnotstopmakingsuchabsurdaccusations(justlike
herfather).Commentingontheincident,onejournalistwroteinSobatweeklyofPune,"Itistrue
thatasyetnoonehasaccusedRSSofbeingresponsiblefortheIranIraqwarbutwecannotbe
surethatsuchanaccusationwouldneverbemadeinIndia."Thesamepatheticallylowmentality
existsaboutSikhstoday.SuchhasbeentheferocityofpersistentantiSikhpropagandacarried
outbythemassmedia.Disastrousconsequencesofthissituationcanstillbeavoided.Intellectuals
fromalloverIndiamustcontinuouslygotoPunjabandtellthetruthtothepeople.Theydohavean
extremelydifficultjobtheyfacethestrongpossibilityofbecomingoutcastes.Buttherearemany

WeweretoldbyGovernmentofIndiaofficialsthatnofiringwasdirectedagainsttheHarminder
Sahib.Eyewitnessessaythatithad360bulletmarks.Halftruthsandrumoursdoseveredamage.

Truthhoweverbittercanbeacceptedincourseoftime.Physicaldamagecanberepaired.But
damagedonetotheprideanddignityofapeople,needseffortsofhonestandsincerepersonsto
repairsuchdamages.WouldIndianintellectualsnowcomeforwardanddotheirduty?Inaddition,
schoolteachers,editors,writers,socialworkersandvariousotherinfluentialgroupsalsoneedto
visitPunjabcontinuously.Withcurrentprosperity,Indiansnowtalkaboutgoingonworldtours.
TheycaneasilygotoPunjabfirst.Thereisalsoaneedtoestablishvariousfriendshipsocieties
(e.g.,MarathaSikhfriendshipsocietytodispelrumoursandmisunderstandingsandpromotebetter
understandingbetweenSikhsandnonSikhHindusofvariousprovinces.Sikhsthemselvesmust
takeactivepartinsuchactivitiesandcomeoutofisolation.

LotofwaterhasflowedunderthebridgesinceIfirstwrotethisbookletinNovember,1984.Butthe
situationremainsasfrightfulasever.WhenfreshelectionswereheldinPunjabin1985,Sikhs
totallyrejectedtheextremistsandstoodsolidlyforthemoderateleaderBarnala.Despitethe
bitternessandthesympathyforBhindranwalecausedbyOperationBlueStar,BabaJoginder
Singh,fatherofBhindranwalewasdefeatedintheelection.Whatmoreproofofpatriotismand
moderationcanbeexpectedoftheSikhs?

jobunderArmyprotectionwashighlyinsultingtoSikhs.

Unfairdistributionofelectricityratherthanofwater,isthemaincomplaintofthefarmers.Rightin
themiddleofsummer,therearepowercutsfor16hoursoftheday.Manytimes,thecanalsare
runningfullofwaterbutwithoutelectricityandthepumpingsetsdonotworkandthecropisruined.
Thisisafact.Punjabifarmers(mostofwhomareSikhs)havemaytimesraisedtheirvoiceand
complainedtotheCentralGovernmentbuttheHindusofPunjab(mostofwhomarecitydwellers)
didnotsupportthisjustdemand.TheSikhsarealsobitteraboutthefactthatmostHindusspeak
PunjabiathomeandworkbutalwaysmaintainofficiallythattheirmothertongueisHindi....There
aremanyotherbonesofcontentionatthebackofthemindsoftheSikhs....

BabaAmtesaysthattheneedofthehourisnottoconfronttheextremistsbuttoisolatethem.

FromAmritsarwemovedontoBatala.Howaminorincidentleadstoanexplosivesituation.
Around15March1986,tworickshawscollidedinBatala.OnecarriedHindus,theotherSikhs.
Fightingbrokeout,policeintervened.Rumoursgrew.AselsewhereinPunjab,thecitydwellersare
Hindus,whileSikhsliveinsurroundingvillages.Whenitwasfalselyreportedthatthelocal
Gurudwarawasburntdown,SikhssurroundedBatalaandcutoffsuppliesofessentials(food,
vegetables,oil,andwater).Thesituationsoongrewugly.LuckilythePoliceOfficerssucceededin
askingsomeSikhstoseeforthemselvesthattheGurudwarawasnotdestroyed.Andthenina
matterofminutestheexplosivesituationfizzledout.(ThereisamoralforthePunjabsituationas
well.EveryonewhohasvisitedPunjabhaschangedhis/heropinionaboutSikhs.Personswho
writesobitterlyaboutSikhsarepreciselythosewhoareunwillingtovisitPunjabandseethingsfor
themselves.)

ThuswhatevertheattitudeofotherIndians,Maharashtrianshavetakentheleadbutthedeep
rootedaffinityandmutualadmirationbetweenMarathasandSikhs,despitealltheattempted
provocations,wastoomuchfortheantiSikhmischiefmakers.Theydecidedtoplaytheirtrump
card.

OnAugust10,1986,GeneralVaidyawasshotdeadinPuneat11.45a.m.Assoonasweheard
thenewsonBBC,mywifesaidtome,"OutofallthepeopleofIndiaitisMarathaswhohad
sympathyleftforSikhs.Withthismurder,eventhathasgone."Nextday,Imetasmallshopkeeper
inSouthWimbledon(London).Hesaid,"Sikhshavegonemad.Theyhavenowstartedkillingeven

NirmalKumarandSukhdevSingh,twoallegedassassins,werecaughtbymerechanceon8
September1986.TheywereinvolvedinanaccidentwithtwotrucksatPimprinearPune.They
haveconfessedtothecrime.TheyhadhiredaflatnotfarfromwhereGeneralVaidyawasliving,
andhadbeenwatchinghismovementsformorethansevenmonths.Howcouldtheydareto
continuetoliveinPuneafterthecrimewithouttheconnivanceofhigherpoliceauthorities19
?InaninterviewwithPoonaDigest,Mrs.Vaidyabitterlyattackedthelocalpolice.Theirprotection
wasvirtuallynonexistentshesaid(SeeMaharashtraTimesof10thSeptember,1986)somuch
sothatonemanevenenteredherbedroomat5.30p.m.Mrs.Vaidyasaysthishappenedaround
15thJune,1986.Atpresent,weonlyknowthatNirmalandSukhdevbothbelongtothegangof
dacoitsledbyJinda.Thebigquestioniswhohiredthem?Whydidtheywaitforsixmonthswhen
thepoliceprotectiontoGeneralVaidyawasutterlyuseless?Itseemswewouldneverknow.The
reportofaninquiryintotheassassinationofIndiraGandhi(i.e.ThakkarCommissionReport)would
notbepublishedintheinterestsofthenation[OfcourseOfcourse!]accordingtoTheTimesof
London,1stAugust,1986,p.8.Byapplyingthesamelaw,MishraCommissionReportonantiSikh
riotsofNovember,1984,wouldalsobenotpublished.

VeerSavarkarwasinLondonduring19061910.On10thMay1908,heorganisedameetingof
Indiansandpaidhomagetothemartyrsofthe1857war.Commemorativebadgestomarkthe
anniversaryofthiswarwerewornwithpridebyIndianstudents.Naturallytherewerearguments,
scuffles,abusesandacrimoniousattacksbytheEnglish.HarnamSingh,astudentofAgricultural
College,Cirencister,wastoldbyhisPrincipaltoremovethecommemorativebadgehewas
wearing.HarnamSinghrefusedandhewasthreatenedwithexpulsion.Undaunted,hesaid
goodbyetohisCollege.Thusthefirstmantoshowcourageandrespecttothemartyrsof

In1911,Savarkarwassenttotransportationforlife,twicei.e.asentenceof50yearsof
Kalapani21.

HissufferingsinprisonweredepictedinnewspapersinAmerica.ThisenragedSikhsandthey
werealsoinspiredbySavarkar'sbookonthe1857war.Therewereseveralarmeduprisings
againsttheBritish.TherevolutionarieswhowerecaughtweresenttoKalapani.From1915
onwards(i.e.justAyearsafterSavarkarwassenttoKalapani)Sikhswerethepredominantgroup
inKalapani.DuetopublicoutcryinIndia,theprisoninAndamanswasclosedin1921andthe
prisonersweretransferredtomainlandIndia.

Savarkarwasreleasedfromprisonin1924butwasinternedinRatnagiri(Maharashtra)until1937.
HewasacutelyawareofthelostopportunityofanarmeduprisingagainsttheBritishduringthe
FirstWorldWar.WhentheSecondWorldWarbrokeoutin1939,heopenlyencouragedtheHindu
youthtojointhearmedforcesinlargenumbers.BythattimepercentageofMuslimsintheIndian

21.AndamanIslandslie900mileseastofMadras.AspecialprisonwassetuptherebytheBritish
todealwiththemosthardened,notoriouscriminals.Theconditionswereextremelyharsh.The
landwasinfestedwithmalaria,leechesandserpents.Hardlyanyonecamebackalivefrom
Andaman.HencethenicknameKalapani.Itstruckterrorintheheartsofeventhemostdangerous
criminals.Revolutionariesweresentthereduring19111921.




BoseacknowledgedhisdebttoSavarkar22.SpeakingonFreeIndiaRadiohesaid,"...when,dueto
misguidedpoliticalwhimsandlackofvision,almostalltheleadersofCongresspartyhavebeen
decryingallthesoldiersoftheIndianArmyasmercenaries,itishearteningtoknowthatVeer
SavarkarisfearlesslyexhortingtheyouthsofIndiatoenlistinthearmedforces.Theseenlisted
youthsthemselvesprovideuswithtrainedmenandsoldiersforourIndianNationalArmy."

Unfortunately,powerinIndiapassedintothehandsofGandhi,NehruandPatelthetrio
determinedtofalsifytheIndianhistory,andthisfalsificationhasbeengoingonforthelast50
years.Afterindependence,R.C.MuzumdarwasentrustedbyNehrutowritethehistoryoffreedom
movementinIndia.ButsoonasitbecameevidentthatMuzumdarwouldgivetherevolutionaries
theirfairshare,hewassackedandthejobwasgiventoMr.Tarachand,whogladlybecameHis
Master'sVoice.Aslongas1954,Dr.P.V.Kane,thenthePresidentoftheIndianHistoryCongress,
complained,"Thereiseverypossibilityofgraveharmbeingdonetotruehistorybygovernment
actionbypoliticalparties,politicallymindedcitizensandmeretheorists.Politicalpropagandahad
oftenmadeuseof"historyasamediumandhistoriansmightbecomeinstrumentsofpolitical
propaganda."
RecentlyIhadoccasiontoreadtheReportoftheZakirHussainCommitteeon'BasicNational
Education'(Wardha,1938).ThatReportstatedthatastheIndianNationhadadoptednon
violenceasthemethodforachievingallroundfreedom,Indianchildrenwouldneedtobetaught
thesuperiorityofnonviolenceoverviolence(p.8).
IbelievethatnohonesthistoryofIndiacanbewrittenbasedontheprinciplesstatedintheReport
referredtoabove,particularlyfortheperiodfromabout1200A.D.to1920.Itwouldbebetternot
toteachanyhistorytostudentsfortheperiodbefore1947atallratherthanteachagarbled
versionofhistory.

NowonderSikhsdidnotgetduerecognitionfortheirmagnificentcontributiontotheIndian
freedomstruggle.AccordingtotheinformationcollectedbySubramanyamSwamy,outof127
freedomfighters,whoweresenttothegallowsbytheBritish,92wereSikhsofthe2,646
revolutionaries,whoweresenttoAndamanIslandsfortransportationforlife(Kalapani)2,147were
Sikhs.Outof20,000soldiersoftheIndianNationalArmyofSubhashChandraBose,12,000were
Sikhs.Andthatwasthecontributionof2%ofourpopulation.

Forthelastcoupleofdecades,wehavebecomeaddictedtothetheorythatallofourtroublesare
duetotheilldesignsofforeignpowers(Britain,Americaandothers).Butwearedoingenormous
damagetoourinterestsourselveswithouttherebeinganyneedfortheforeignerstodoanything.
Savarkar'syoungerbrotherNarayanaraowasalsoagreatpatriotandhissonVikrampublishesa
newspapercalledPrajvalantfromNagpur.Initsissueof22ndJuly1985,BalJerewrites,"Ifwe
examinehistoryofourfreedommovement,wefindthatSikhsweresupportingtheBritishoratbest
theyremainedalooforneutral.Theyshouldhavebeenshowntheirproperplace,after
independence."BalJereisthesamepersonwhowasacloseassociateofVeerSavarkarand
onewhoevenwitnessedhislastwillandtestament.WhenthisiswhathehassaidaboutSikhs,
whyblametheforeignpowersalone?

ThereseemtobegoodgroundsforsuspectingthatGovernmentofIndiaitselfisplayinga
dangerousandfoolishgameofplantingitsownagentsamongSikhslivingoverseas.Theseagents
terroriselocalSikhsandforcethemtokeepquiet,captureseatsofauthorityinSikhorganisations
byfascistmethods,makehighlyinflammatoryantiIndianspeechesandevencreateariftbetween
SikhsandnonSikhHinduslivingabroad.ThisgivesIndiaaverybadnameinforeignpressand
makeslivesofordinaryoverseasIndiansextremelydifficult.ButaslongasSikhsaremaligned,

SecretServicesencouragedinfiltrationofPakistanisinRajasthan.GovernmentofIndiasimply
duckedtheallegations.

Disgustedbytheeventsofthelastfouryears,someSikhsarenowsaying,"DuringvariousMuslim
riotsoverlasthundredyears,Sikhsdidnothavetogetinvolvedtheycouldhavekeptout."But
howcouldthey?Howcantheelderbrothernotfeelenragedwhentheyoungerbrotherisbeing
beatenupbythugs?Evenaslateas1982Marathipapershaveconfessed,"Sikhshavealways
foughttodefendthehonouranddignityofweHindusandwithmuchmorevigourthanHindus
themselves."IfonlywesearchthehistoryofBritishRuleinIndiamorecarefully.

20February,1939.VeerSavarkarwashonouredbytheSikhsofCalcutta.Theyopenlydeclared,
"WearegoingtodefendtheHindusocietywithourlives."Savarkarpubliclyacknowledgedthefact
inDecember1939(andonotheroccasionsalso).

SavarkarstartedunarmedstrugglefortherightsofHindusofNizam'skingdomin1939.Master
TaraSinghwasPresidentofGurudwaraPrabandhakCommittee.HeopenlydeclaredthatSikhs
wouldnaturallyparticipateinthestruggle.Agroup(jatha)wassentinMarch,1939.Amongother
Sikhswhojoinedin,weevenfindBabaMadanSinghGaga.Hehadsufferedfor20years'
transportationforlifeintheAndamanIslands(Kalapani)forhispartinuprisingsofGadrParty.
EvenaslateasFebruary/March1984,SikhsrushedtothehelpofHinduswhenHinduMuslimriots
eruptedinBombay,Bhivandiandotherplaces.(Wehavequotedafewwellknownexamples.A

ItmaybearguedthatthebackgroundoftheAryaSamajhasbeenquitedifferentfromthatof
Sikhs.Fairenough.LetusseekanswerstosomesimplequestionsandseeifAryaSamajishave
changedatallsince1947.

In1950,therewasacarnageofHindusinEastBengal(nowBangladesh).Evenpersonslike
JayaprakashNarayanwereadvocatingmilitaryaction.ButNehrudidnosuchthingandonthe
ordersofthe(socalled)IronmanSardarPatel,HinduMahasabhaleaders,includingVeer
Savarkar,wereimprisonedunderthePreventiveDetentionAct:DidtheAryaSamajisprotest?

No.TheysupportedNehrujustasvehementlyastheyhadsupportedGandhi.

DespitetheNehruLiaquatAliPact,thecarnageofHindusinEastBengalcontinuedandyet

InFebruary1966,VeerSavarkarpassedaway.ButnoCongressPartyofficialorMinisterof

preachedtwocenturiesbeforeGuruNanak,landoftheindestructibleGuruTegBahadur,ofGuru
GovindSingh.whodecidedtoraiseswordtoprotectourdharma,ofMadanlalDhingrawhorocked
theBritishEmpirein1909andwhosecouragewasadmiredevenbyChurchill,landofBhagat
SinghandofUdhamSingh,whoshotSirMichaelO'DwyerandavengedtheJalianwalaBag
massacre,landofgreenrevolution,isverymuchourlandandwewouldkeepitthatway.God
helpsthosewhohelpthemselves.

In1675,GuruTegbahadurandhisdiscipleswerebroughtbeforeAurangzebandgiventhechoice
ofacceptingIslamordeathbyhideoustortures.ThebravemenrefusedtorenounceHindu
religion.BhaiMatidaswassawnintwolikeapieceofwood.BhaiSatidaswasburntalive.Bhai
Dayalalwasboiledalivelikeapotato.Whendespitesuchhorrificacts,GuruTegbahadurrefused
torenounceHinduism,hewasbeheaded.

Itisbecauseofthesupremesacrificesofmenlikethosethateven250yearslaterVeerSavarkar
proudlydeclared:"YeHinduajtakjindarahahaiaurrahanewalabhihai."(WeHindushave
survivedandaregoingtosurviveasHindus.)LikeVeerSavarkarletusvowtofighttothelastdrop
ofourbloodtopreventthedisintegrationofIndia.Letusrecitethefamousverseeveryday
