Frontier:
Inthepast,duringthepoliticalevolutionsofastate,stateswereseparatedbyareas,notlines.Thefunctionof
theinterveningareawastopreventdirectcontactbetweentheneighbouringstatesanditwasreferredtoasa
frontier.
Afrontier,can,thus,bedefinedasapoliticogeographicalarea,lyingbeyonddefinedbordersofapolitical
unitintowhichexpansioncouldtakeplace(forinstance,EuropeanpenetrationintotheZuluNatalareaand,
inmoderntimes,Antarctica).Itisaphysicalandmoralconceptwhichimpliedlookingoutwardsandmoving
outwards.Itisnotanabstractconceptbutafactoflifeamanifestationofthetendencyforspontaneous
growthofecumene.
AccordingtoLapradelle,therearethreestagesintheevolutionofafrontier,viz.,(i)designatedzoneof
influenceofdifferentphysicalphenomena(ii)anthropologicalgeographicalconcept(iii)politicalfrontier.
Boundary:
Itimpliesthephysicallimitofsovereigntyandjurisdictionofastateitisamanifestationofintegrationand
isorientedinwards.

Existenceofboundariesshowsthatapoliticalcommunityhasreachedarelativedegreeofmaturity,
orderlinessandbeinglawabiding.Frontiersandboundariesareproductsofsociopoliticalforcesandare,
thus,subjectiveandnotobjective
