For starters, women are obliged to wear a long black cloak called
Abaya usually paired with a head- scarf called Hijab or Niqcab which is

leaving a slit for the eyes. Fanatic WORLD muslims wear the Burka which is cover-
ing the body from head to toe with a mesh for the eyes. Non-Muslim
women are obliged to wear the Hijab only in the presence of the religious po-
lice. Men on the other hand, are not obliged to wear something special. If they want,
they wear a Thobe in public which is an Arab garment usually with long sleeves, similar to a
robe. They should not have long hair but if they have, they usually cover it with a traditional
Middle Eastern headdress known as Keffiyeh fashioned from a square scarf usually made of
cotton.
As regards the Arabic cuisine, it is mainly a
combination of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern
and Indian food. People in Saudi Arabia are not
allowed to eat pork or consume alcohol for reli-
gious reasons. However, they have some very
tasty dishes such as hummus or falafel with pita
bread and loaf of bread stuffed with lentil or on-
ion soup. They also have some heavy sweets for
example kanafeh which is a Middle Eastern cheese
pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup. The Ar-
abs rely heavily on a diet of dates, wheat, barley,
rice and meat with little variety and emphasis on
yogurt products such as labneh which is yoghurt
without butterfat.
Thobe To sum up, the Arabs have a very complicated
but exciting culture. I believe that people who
visit the Arabic countries should read and learn about these peculiar but
interesting cultural elements. Chara Stavridou3rd Grade Abaya
