Hi Keith,

Thanks for the suggestions. Either idea sounds like a feasible option. It may come down to who I am able able to help with the transportation
of the bikes. I have a few people to ask already, I was just getting a few ducks in a row before doing so. It would be neat to see them loaded
into the container to go over seas. I definitely want to do the initial donation occur at our school, because I think more families will participate
since they will be coming to the school for an event that night already. I am hoping to have students make some signs to hang up around
some of our local businesses and maybe even with our other feeder schools. Thank you so much for your help in this project. I have started
putting together information for our staff and a flyer to be emailed home to families.

Thanks again,
Lorrie

Hi Lorrie,
Another possibility is to bring your bikes to the PROPOSED loading of a container of 500 bikes
desAned for overseas, by the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek at Triangle Motors, N Market St, Frederick,
on Saturday morning, April 22.
The clear posiAve to this would be that you would know where the bikes would be going, and those
aLending could see the (qualifying) bikes actually going into a container. :-)
Just brainstorming

Hello Keith,

Thanks so much for your quick response!

Pairing with Otterbein United Methodist sounds like a great plan to me. One of my contacts
Pairing with Otterbein United Methodist sounds like a great plan to me. One of my contacts
from Solid Waste for Washington County (Anthony Drury) was familiar with your program too
and had also suggested pairing up with them and was going to get me a contact number.

In part of my advertisement I was emailing out was to ask for monetary donations, my principal,
Ms. Dana Peake, suggested this as we may have some families who would like to participate,
but may not have a bike to offer. I do have to work out some logistics for how we will collect
on the 6th and where we will store the bikes until we can get them to Otterbein. I do plan to
have students help create posters. We are going to have a assembly to help pump up students
and introduce them to the program and what they can do to help. I have one of our teachers has
some teenage boys who were going to help some with the hands on part, but I will be looking
for additional volunteers too. I just wanted to get details from your organization before getting
the ball rolling too much.

I will definitely let you know what questions we have. Again, I appreciate your help and we are
looking forward to working with you!

Thanks,
Lorrie Trader

Hi Lorrie, thanks for your email and interest in doing a collecAon. YveLe is on vacaAon and likely out
of touch unAl mid-week next. I hesitate to make any commitments without consulAng with her.
However, I think it could well work as you suggested, i.e., do the collecAon on the 6th, take your
Ame to prep them and ensure that the kids get the full benet of parAcipaAon, and then transport a
few miles to another event. Thank you for oering to mobilize the school community to do this last
task. I would suggest coordinaAng with our long-term friends at OLerbein United Methodist Church
in downtown Hagerstown. OLerbein has done an annual collecAon the last Saturday of April and
this years event is April 29. Bringing to OLerbein would be the easiest, and its quite possible they
could provide some transport assistance as well. Your students, if not already impressed by what
they collect on the 6th, may nd the OLerbein event impressive! TradiAonally they get over 200
bikes (and we send a 26 box truck to pick them up).

Do bear in mind that we humbly suggest that donors of bikes contribute an addiAonal $10 to defray
a share of geqng the bike to its eventual desAnaAon, and geqng good info back. This is not a
required fee, but a voluntary donaAon, hence tax-deducAble, but if one doesnt adverAse it ahead
of Ame, and suggest it gently but clearly when people bring in the bikes, we will not get anything
(and go broke). Even $5 would be welcomed. (And someAmes we get $20 and more.)

How do you anAcipate doing things on April 6th? April 6th is a Thursday and arguably less conducive
to having people bring bikes in.

As part of engaging the students, would they be designing an outreach strategy and materials, and
geqng the word out? When would you be wanAng to prep the bikes? Do you have a apparent or a
teacher with some experience with bikes who could help mentor hands-on?? etc.

Hello,

My name is Lorrie Trader, I am a 5th grade teacher and coordinator of our schools Green
School initiatives. We were interested in hosting a bike collection in April if possible.
Instead of celebrating Earth Day, we are participating in a series of events to celebrate Earth
Month instead. We have another event planned for our school on April 6th already and
thought it could be a perfect opportunity for families to bring the bike donations too. Then
we were going to have volunteers from our local high schools and possibly some of our
students help prepare the bikes (with the pedals and handle bars as you showed in the video I
watched). Depending on how many bikes we get it might be a little later than the 6th until
we have them ready for pick up. I know this date is fast approaching. Is it still possible to
arrange for a collection or if there is a local drop off we could also get assistance from our
school community to help get the bikes where we need them.
I am looking forward to working with you and hope we can arrange hosting a collect for your
Bikes for the World organization.

Thank you,
Lorrie Trader
