UST COLLEGE OF SCIENCE-DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

PSY 235: Behavior Measurement and Analysis 2

Science Week 2017 HW

DIRECTIONS:

1. Choose a pair. For an odd-numbered class size, only one (1) group will be allowed to
have three (3) members.

2. Choose one topic in the various research poster exhibits. By pair/trio, read and
analyze the research.

3. Supply the details required on the next page. Answers must be typewritten on the
HW template provided on the next page. Feel free to adjust the space based on the
amount of information you will give.

4. All HW sheets must be submitted to the class president on or before March 7 (for TTh
classes) or March 8 (for WF classes). Do not include this page when submitting.

5. Class President, please compile the papers in a ring binder (if you submitted one last
term, please get it in the Psych Dept.) before submitting.

6. Submit during BMA2 time. A 2-point-deduction will be given for submission past
BMA2 time, and 5-point deduction for every succeeding day.

Research Title: Internalized Homophobia and Self-Stigma as Predictors of

Suicide Behavior Among Filipino Lesbians and Gays in the Philippines
General Research Question: Is there a significant relationship between the
Internalized Homophobia and Self-Stigma as a predictor of suicide behavior among
Filipino Lesbians and Gays in the Philippines?
General Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between Internalized
Homophobia and Self-Stigma as a predictor of suicide behavior among Filipino
Lesbians and Gays in the Philippines.

Research Design: Quantitative, Non-Experimental.

Why is this the most appropriate research design for this study?
Quantitative, Non-Experimental design is the most appropriate design because the
variables they used cannot be manipulated. The variables are naturally existing
attributes or when random assignment of individuals to a given treatment
condition would be unethical. The data are empirical and quantifiable. Also, the
variables that they will be using are to represent different amounts of quantitative
variables and different classifications of categorical variables.

Statistical Tests: (in 1-2 sentence(s), briefly explain the use of the statistical
test)
1. Descriptive Tests- are numbers that are used to summarize and describe
data.
2. Pearson-product moment correlation- is a measure of the extent to which
paired scores occupy the same or opposite positions within their own
distributions.
3. Multiple regression analysis- is used when we want to predict the value of
a variable based on the value of two or more other variables.

Summary of Research Findings:

Suicidal behaviors, within the age bracket of 10 to 24 of the LGBT community

participants, have positive correlation with Internalized Homophobia and self-
stigma based on the Pearson-product moment correlation. The findings also
further illustrate that HSS scores significantly correlates with all the SPS subscales
except for the Negative Self-Evaluation. With the HSS scores presenting only the
degree of Internalized homophobia in contrast to the SPS subscales which
presents ones own negative appraisals of their experiences.
The research also revealed that between lesbian and gay participants, only their
suicide behaviors scores differ markedly. According to it, being a lesbian and at the
same time being a woman is considered a double, triple minority status.
Which further burdens the experiences of a Lesbians life.

Strengths of the Research:

Longitudinal studies possible; Successfully incorporates various research
tools; Comprehensive presentation of data; Precise data measurements.

Weaknesses of the Research:

Difficult to make comparisons.

If you were to replicate (do the same study) the research, what changes
will you do?

The recommended changes would serve to address the present weakness of the
research. Such as, but not limited to widening the age bracket of respondents to
make the study more inclusive hence making production of comparisons be less
tedious.
