0 INTRODUCTION

This document is a combination of all the detailed inventories of all the seven laboratories at the headquarters in
Nairobi, and the eleven regional laboratories spread all over the country in the Ministry of Roads-Materials Testing &
Research Department. This document seeks to pursue best practices in Laboratory Equipment Management with
reference to ISO 9001:2008 & ISO 17025.

The data on each equipment entails: name of the equipment, model, serial number, use, status and where the
equipment is as when the inventory was taken.

This document will be routinely revised to offer additional and real time data on each equipment in the Ministry of
Roads-Materials Testing & Research Department by incorporating SMART equipment management software. The
software among other functions will offer the following solutions: storing, managing and tracking the equipment service
program (installation, repair, maintenance & calibration) and develop easy access to equipment data.

A well maintained laboratory equipment among many benefits does the following: helps in maintaining a high level of
laboratory performance, creates confidence in the results in terms of accuracy, lowers repairs costs as they are fewer,
lengthens the life of the equipment, increases safety of the workers & produces greater customer satisfaction.

The scope (in terms of developing a detailed equipment inventory) in future, will also extend to the Laboratory
Equipments in the Laboratories of the On-going road projects.
