Lord of the Flies: Chapter Eleven and Twelve

Notes
As you read chapters eleven and twelve of Lord of the Flies, take notes by adding details to the spaces below. Once
you are finished taking notes, respond to the discussion question and identify 5 or more vocabulary words you have
learned in these chapters. Refer back to our chapter 11-12 Quizlet study set as needed.

I. Chapter 11 discussion questions:


A. What is myopia? What makes Piggy myopic? Are there other myopic characters
(figuratively speaking)? Discuss the significance of blindness (literal and figurative) in this chapter.
Piggys myopia nearsightedness is both literal and figurative. He doesnt have his glasses, but
he is also naive.
Piggy peered anxiously into the luminous veil that hung between him and the world
Every boy that doesnt understand that the beast is them is myopic in a sense. Jack especially.

B. What happens to Samneric in this chapter? Why do you think they chose Samneric?
What do Samneric want to do to protect themselves from this fate, before they even leave for Jacks
camp?

They are tied up by Jacks tribe


They chose the twins because they stayed with Ralph.
They want to paint themselves like savages like Jacks guys.

C. What do Jack and Ralph do after Ralph calls Jack a thief? Who advises them to stop?
What do they do after he orders Samneric to be tied up?
They have a fight.

D. What is the significance of Piggys injury in this chapter? Is Piggy a static or dynamic character?

Foreshadowing: Ralph tells Piggy hell get hurt, and he responds what can he do more than
he has.

Piggy is trying to be dynamic but he is not very good at it because he is physically weak.

II. Chapter 12 discussion questions:


A. When Ralph comes upon the Lord of the Flies in the jungle, what does he do? What
is the significance of this action?
He smacks it and breaks it a part.
He it's no longer afraid he is tough now.
B. How do SamnEric offer support to Ralph when he finds them guarding the gates on
Castle Rock?
They tell Ralph that they will help him escape because the hunters are going to kill him

C. What can you infer Roger and Jack intend to do with the stick that is sharpened at both
ends?
They are going to kill Ralph and put his heat on the steak like what they did with the Lord of
the flies.

D. Near the end of the book, it says, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of
man's heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy. What do you think this
quote means? Think of Ralph's perspective, how did he change, what did he learn? Was he friends with
Piggy at the beginning?
Raph is growth up to learn a lesson, he is has learned how hard it is be a leader how important friends are
and how import means be strong mentally and physically. In the beginning Piggy and Ralph werent friend
he was mind to Piggy but in the end he has a deep friendship with Piggy.
