Syndrome Study

Syndrome: 22q11 (deletion syndrome)

What does this child look like?

Opening in the roof of the mouth (a cleft palate)

Distinctive facial features

Skeletal problems (mild shortness and abnormality in spinal bones)

What might I expect in regard to the type of disabilities the student might have?

Physical differences

Sick more often then others (immune system problems and autoimmune

disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and Grave disease in which the immune

system attacks the bodys own tissues and organs.

Feeding difficulties

Hearing loss

Gastrointestinal problems

ADHD

Autism spectrum disorders

Learning

Can he/ she talk? Can they see and hear?

Yes, he or she can talk and see. However, hearing loss may occur.

How many people have this syndrome? Are there a lot?

Maybe be more but it is often under diagnosed or mistaken for other

disorders that have overlapping features

What cause this syndrome? Is it a specific gene or what?

It is a deletion of chromosome 22

How can I help teach him or her in class?

Routines

Constant aid

Are there specific instructional strategies and or techniques that we need to use?

Allowing for assignments and lectures to be posted online so the

individual can still do homework while they are sick.

You may need to explain an assignment or lecture a few more times or in

a different way so it can click

Do we have to have a lot of equipment at his desk or in my classroom? I dont know

much about technology, what might I have to learn to use with your help.
