Lord of the Flies: Chapter Eleven and Twelve

Notes
As you read chapters eleven and twelve of Lord of the Flies, take notes by adding details to the spaces below. Once
you are finished taking notes, respond to the discussion question and identify 5 or more vocabulary words you have
learned in these chapters. Refer back to our chapter 11-12 Quizlet study set as needed.

I. Chapter 11 discussion questions:


A. What is myopia? What makes Piggy myopic? Are there other myopic characters
(figuratively speaking)? Discuss the significance of blindness (literal and figurative) in this chapter.
- Myopia is an absence of forethought or a restrictive view
- Piggy is myopic because he needs glasses to help him see
- He is also myopic because he does a lot of things without thinking
- He proposed to basically go charging into Jacks camp
demanding his glasses back without even thinking of how that would affect their
relationship with Jacks tribe.
- He is blinded by his need for society and is willing to hold the conch until the
end
- He doesnt see they want to kill him
- Jack is blinded by power and wants to stay a leader
- Ralph doesnt want to see that everyone is savage now and cant be changed
- The significance of blindness in this chapter is
- The things theyre doing against each other is straining their relationship and
potentially their ability to not only survive on the island, but to thrive.

B. What happens to Samneric in this chapter? Why do you think they chose Samneric?
What do Samneric want to do to protect themselves from this fate, before they even leave for Jacks
camp?
- Jack has the hunters surround Samneric, saying See? They do what I want.
- Ralph is telling Jack and his group how without the signal fire, they wont be
rescued
- Jack and the savages no longer care about being rescued, they just blindly
obey Jack
- Samneric are forced to join Jacks group
- They tie them up and it foreshadows torture

C. What do Jack and Ralph do after Ralph calls Jack a thief? Who advises them to stop?
What do they do after he orders Samneric to be tied up?
- Jack and Ralph start fighting
- Piggy tells them to stop
- Jack orders Samneric to join his tribe

D. What is the significance of Piggys injury in this chapter? Is Piggy a static or dynamic character?

II. Chapter 12 discussion questions:


A. When Ralph comes upon the Lord of the Flies in the jungle, what does he do? What
is the significance of this action?
- He punches him in the face
- He shows he wanted to protect himself from the savage boys (mainly Jack and Roger)

B. How do SamnEric offer support to Ralph when he finds them guarding the gates on
Castle Rock?
- They tell him a little of what is planned for him
- They warn him to get away and stay away
- They also handed him a piece of meat to eat while in hiding

C. What can you infer Roger and Jack intend to do with the stick that is sharpened at both
ends?
- Perhaps they intend to kill him with it
- Maybe theyll put Ralphs head on a stick like they did with the first pig

D. Near the end of the book, it says, Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of
man's heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy. What do you think this
quote means? Think of Ralph's perspective, how did he change, what did he learn? Was he friends with
Piggy at the beginning?
- It shows Ralph misses Piggy
- He didnt see his true worth until he died
- He didnt like Piggy in the beginning
- They were blinded by their savagery
