about the pieces

Ruth Morris Gray arranged Saludo, Saludo and many other songs. She grew up singing in
choirs as a part of church as well as school. Gray has been composing from the age of 15 and
has grown a long way since then (Ruth Morris Gray, 2011). She completed a masters degree in
Music Composition from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She owes the
development of [her] craft to [her] mentor.. Dr. Edwin T. Childs (Ruth Morris Gray, 2011). Ruth
tries to present multicultural music through a variety of things- using Japanese fans during Uji
River as well as reading the translation of Two South African Folk Songs.

Saludo, Saludo was composed in 2013 by Ruth Morris Gray under Heritage Music Press
(ruthmorrisgray.com, n.d.). It is sung in both Spanish and English. It is a three-part piece
composed for Sopranos, Altos, and Bases. There is also an optional percussion, which we were
lucky enough to have a player for!

I really like this song because it seems so welcoming and happy! Its wonderful to be singing a
song in Spanish. I also am very fond of the fact that the lines sung in Spanish are also repeated
in English (for the non-Spanish speakers [e.g., me]). The line greetings now for all we want to
give to you feels very personal with the audience- as if the singers (us!) are welcoming them for
coming and extending their metaphorical hand to them.
