Unit Title: Inquiry Time: 30 min

1st Lesson: Heating and Cooling Matter

Unit Overview
Main Idea (Claim) Summative Assessment
Anything that takes up space is matter. The
main idea of this lesson is that student will Project
know that matter can change the phase.(liquid
to solid, solid to liquid, liquid to gas)

Guiding Questions Objectives (know/understand/do/value)

-What is matter? -Students will be able to identify and know that
- What is heating matter? matter can change the phase.
- What is cooling matter? - Students will know and understand that
heating and cooling can change the matter.
.

Time Instructional Procedures and Strategies

Beginning the Lesson:

Greeting students.
Reading through the classroom rules
Listen carefully
Raise your hand
Be patient
5 min Be respectful
Teacher will review the previous unit which was about state of matter.
Teacher: will start a new unit about heating and cooling matter.
Ask them if they know what the 3 states of matter are.
List the three states of matter on the board.
Teacher will tell student that they are going to learn about change in
matter.
Ask your students if a solid can turn into a liquid. Explain that a cube of
ice can turn into a liquid with heat. Place a cube of ice in warm water,
and have your students observe it for 5 minutes. Show your students
how the ice is starting to melt.
Ask your students if a liquid can turn into a gas. Place a glass of water in
12 min a microwave. Set the microwave to 3 minutes. Take out the cup and
show students that the bubbles formed on top of the water consist of gas.

Developing the Lesson

What will happen if you put the clay in the cooler? Is it hard or soft? To find the
answer they should do the experiment

Have them hold a small piece of clay in their fists while you count to 60 or count
together with the students. How does the clay fell? How easy is it to roll of pinch?

20 min Put the pieces of clay in a cooler (make it ready before the lesson). Remove the clay
from the cooler and discuss how it has changed. Is it easier or harder to roll?

What will happen if you put the water into the freezer? Do you think it becomes ice or
still become water? What is the change? Liquid changes into solid when we freezed it
and solid change into liquid when we heated it.
(Prepare the ice cube in the freezer if its possible)

What will happen if you heat the water? Its boiling. What can you see? A steam
3 min When you heat water you will see that liquid changes into gas

Some changes are temporary. Clay can become soft and hard and
then soft again as it is heated and cooled. The water can be cooled
again become ice. Ice can melt to become water. The water can be
cooled again become ice.

Closing the Lesson:

o Gather them in one place.
o Revise the lesson
o Matter can change the phase. Some matter changes temporary and some matter
changes permanent.

Formative Assessment Differentiation

- Student will observe and discuss what - I will demonstrate and show the activity
will happen together with the teacher. how it works and giving example.
Then they will draw on a piece of
paper.
