READING LAO / A PROGRAMMED INTRODUCTION Warren G. Yates and Souksomboun Sayasithsena FOREIGN SERVICE INSTITUTE WASHINGTON, D.C. 1974 OE FP AR ft M EN Tt OU Si A FOREIGN SERVICE INSTITUTE BASIC COURSE SERIES Edited by AUGUSTUS A. KOSKI For snl by the Superintendent of Documents US Government Printing Offee ‘Washimeton. DC 20402" Price 9595 ‘Stack Number 4400-01582 ii PREFACE Lao, the official language of Laos, is spoken by approximately three million per- sons in that country and by some ten million more in Thailand. Reading Lao: A Programmed Introduction is the first of a two-volume course designed to teach students to read newspaper articles, short stories, technical descriptions of moderate difficulty, literary narratives, political speeches and other materials of similar difficulty. The gener- al plan for the work was made by Warren G. Yates, Chairman of the Foreign Service Insti- tute Department of East Asian Languages, and Souksomboun Sayasithsena, Lao language instructor at FSI. Mr. Sayasithsena provided the Lao language material and did the seribal work. Dr. Yates supplied English glosses and explanations of grammar. Mrs Siamphorn Douangpanya typed a large part of the text, including both English and Lao portions, Tape recordings, which are an integral part of this course of study, were made in the FSI studio under the technical direction of Jose M. Ramirez. The FSI Audio-Visual Staff, under the direction of Thomas E. Bower, provided useful assistance in the layout of many pages in this volume. FSI appreciates the cooperation of the Lao Embassy in making available to the School of Language Studies a Lao typewriter for preparing the camera copy of a major portion of the text. An unusual feature of the text is that it is fully self-instructional, the information in this volume being fully supplemented by the guidance provided by the tapes. FSI gratefully acknowledges the encouragement which Julia A. Petrov and Richard T. ‘Thompson of the U. 8. Office of Education have given to this and other developmental work at the Foreign Service Institute. Financial support from the U. 8. Office of Edu- cation has made the publication of this volume possible. lie K Gath James R. Frith, Dean School of Language Studies Foreign Service Institute iti A. A Programmed Introduction INTRODUCTION The Language Iaotian or lao is the official language of the Kingdom of Laos. It is spoken by some three million people in Laos and by another ten million people in N.E, Thailand. Lao is a member of the Tai language family, which includes all dialects of Thai, Shan, and many other related lenguages in the northern parts of Laos, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam and in South China. Iactian is basically monosyllabic and tonal, but there has been extensive borrowing from Sanskrit and Pali at different periods in history; in fact, almost all polysyllabic words relating to government, the Court, Buddhism, science, and philosophy are of Sanskrit or Peli origin. The Seript The origin of the present Lao script can not be exactly determined, but it is clear that it is derived from some version of the ancient Bhrami script of India. The earliest writing was probably done by Buddhist priests who wrote in some version of that script whether transcribing Mahayana texts in Sanskrit or Hinayana texts in Pali. The Lao writing system is alphabetic and is written from left to right in a continuous line with spacing only after larger units like phrases or sentences. Consonants are usually read in the sequence they are written in, but vowels and diphthongs may be written before, above, below, after, or in @ combination of positions with the consonant they are to be read after. READING LAO: A Programmed Introduction ‘The pitch contour of each syllable is clearly indicated within the syllable by a set of systematic features, The Nature and Objectives of this Course This text is one part of the course. The other portion is a set of tape recordings. The text provides all of the visual material, and the tapes provide all the audio portion of the course. Neither is complete without the other. However, the text and the taped materials together comprise a fully self-instructional course in reading basic Lao written materials. There are approximately 1600 'frames' in the course. Fach is numbered and is to be performed in sequence. Since each frame requires varying amounts of time, it is difficult (if not impossible) to say how many hours would be required for anyone to finish the course. It is expected that anyone who completes this course would be able to read elementary written materials of all types, whether in connected text or not, with good facility and would be able to read intermediate materials with moderate use of the dictionary. The Approach As has been said before, this is a fully programmed course. As such this course was designed with the following basic tenets in min (1) Organization of material for presentation in an orderly and systematic fashion, (2) Presentation of material in small increments, (3) Frequent and varied repetition of points of information, vi READING LAO: A Programmed Introduction (4) Elicitation of correct responses, (5) Provision for immediate confirmation of responses, and (6) Guidance with respect to subject matter. The term 'fully self-instructional' is used to mean that no outside help is required to learn the material. Whatever guidance is required is provided in the tapes. E, Prerequisites for the Course Whereas a student who has had no previous experience with the Lao language might well succeed in learning to read Lao materials contained in this course, the procedure is not recommended; in fact, the text has not been designed with this in view. Before using these materials, the student should have had a minimal introduction to spoken Leo whether within an organized program or from experience in a Lao-speaking environ- ment. There are no other prerequisites, since all of the information required for reading Lao is provided either in the text or on the tapes. F. How to Follow this Course It will be necessary to acquire the tapes that accompany this text and a tape recorder. Whereas, the tape recorder need not be of very high fidelity, it should be able to reproduce sound of good enough quality so that vowels and diphthongs can be easily distinguished from each other and pitch contour contrasts can be heard clearly, Full instructions as to how to proceed through the course are given in the chart on the following page. vii READING LAO: A Programmed Introduction SEQUENCE OF ACTIVITY WITHIN A FRAME PREPARATION: FRAME NUMBER LISTEN TO ANNOUNCEMENT: INSTRUCTIONS: ‘A.
