Arrangements

Pillot Ladder

Steps
Made of hardwood Made in 1 piece, free of knots;
Made of other material Equivalent strength, stiffness and durability;
4 lowest steps Made of rubber or other material to the administration
satisfaction:
Should have non-slip surface

Secured, so each remain on the horizontal when in use;

Common Mistakes
X Steps must be equally spaced;
X Spreaders must not be placed between steps (without proper
space);
X All steps must be of equal size;
X Steps must not be slippery or painted;
X NO shackles (manilhas), knots or splices.

Spreader Steps
Impedem que a escada rode no costado;
O primeiro spreader deve se encontrar no quinto degrau de baixo para
cima;
O intervalo entre spreaders no deve ultrapassar 9 degraus;
Comprimento : 1,80 m

Side Ropes
2 uncovered ropes with not less than 18mm in diameter;
Should ne continuous, with no joints;
The two sides should consist of one continuous length of rope;
Should be made of Manila, or equivalent strength material;

Accomodation Ladder
Angle must not exceed 45 degrees;
Lower platform must be secured to ships side when in use;
Lower Platform must be in horizontal;
Distance between the pilot ladder and the accommodation ladder must be
between 0,1 0,2m;
The pilot ladders end should extend at least 2m above the accommodation
ladders lower platform;

Mechanical Pilot Hoist

PROHIBITED by SOLAS

Acces to Deck
Should be gained directly by platform securely guarded by handrails;
The handholds should be not less than 0,7 to 0,8m apart;
The handholds minimum diameter 32mm;
Extend to a minimum of 1,2m above the top of the bulwarks.

Safe approach of the Pilot Boat

6 meters of unobstructed shipside should be provided;
Vessels under 90m do not have to comply with this rule.

Points of access
The points of access to the ship may be:
A ships side opening;
An accommodation ladder;
A single section pilot ladder
