Homework 4, Mechanics of Materials, Spring 2017

Due at 6:00 pm on Mar. 23, 2017.

1. Rod AB is made of steel that is assumed to be

elastoplastic with E=200 GPa and Y=300
MPa. After the rod has been attached to the
rigid lever CD, it is found that end C is 6 mm
1m
too high. A vertical force Q is then applied at
C until this point has moved to position C.
Determine the required magnitude of Q and
the deflection 1 if the ever is to snap back to
a horizontal position after Q is removed.

2. The steel rod ABC is attached to rigid supports and

is unstressed at a temperature of 25oC. The steel is
assumed elastoplastic, with E=200 GPa and y=250
MPa. The temperature of both portions of the rod is
then raised to 160oC. Knowing that =11.7*10-6/oC,
determine (a) the reaction at end B, (b) the stress in
portion AC, (c) the displacement of point C.

3. The allowable shearing stress is 100 MPa in the steel rod AB and
60 MPa in the rod BC. The diameter of the rod AB is 34 mm, and
the diameter of the rod BC is 42 mm. Neglecting the effect of
stress concentrations, (a) determine the largest torque that can be
applied at A; (b) given that the length of the rod AB is 10 mm and
that the length of the rod BC is 20 mm, determine the angle of
twist due to the largest torque at A.
4. (a) For the aluminum pipe shown (G=29 GPa),
determine the torque T0 causing the angle of twist
of 2.5o. (b) Determine the angle of twist if the same
torque T0 is applied to a solid cylinder shaft of the
same length and cross-sectional area.

5. The composite shaft shown consists of a 5

mm thick steel jacket (G=77 GPa) bonded to
a 30 mm diameter brass core (G=39 GPa).
Knowing that the shaft is subjected to 560
N.m torques, determine (a) the maximum
Steel jacket
shearing stress in the steel jacket, (b) the
maximum shearing stress in the brass core, (c) Brass core
the angle of twist of end B relative to end A.
