3, Two horizontal 5-kip forces are applied to pin B of the assembly shown. Given that a pin of 0.8in
diameter is used at each connection, determine the maximum value of the average normal stress (a) in
link AB, (b) in link BC.

4. A steel railroad track (E= 200 GPa ,a=11.7*10-6/˚c ) was laid out at a temperature of 6˚c, Determine
the normal stress in the rails when the temperature reaches 48 ˚c, assuming that the rails (a) are welded to
form a continuous track, (b) are 10m long with 3-mm gaps between them.

5, A load P is applied to a steel rod supported as shown by an aluminum plate into which a 0.6in diameter
hole has been drilled. Given that the shearing stress must not exceed 18 ksi in the steel rod and 10 ksi in
the aluminum plate, determine the largest load P which may be applied to the rod.

6. A. For the hollow shaft and loading shown, determine the maximum shearing stress.

B. Determine the diameter of a solid shaft for which the maximum shearing stress is the same as in part
A.

7. The torques shown are exerted on pulleys A and B. Given that each shaft is solid, determine the
maximum shearing stress (a) in shaft AB, (b) in shaft BC.

8. (a) Determine the torque which may be applied to a solid shaft of 90-mm outer diameter without
exceeding an allowable shearing stress of 75 MPa. (b) Solve part a, assuming that the solid shaft is
