QUESTION 1

The rigid bar CDEis attached to a pin support at E as shown in figure 1 and rests on the 30 mm
diameter brass cylinder BD. A 22 mm diameter steel rod AC passes through a hole in the bar and
is secured by a nut which is snugly fitted when the temperature of the entire assembly is 20 ° C.
The temperature of the brass cylinder is then raised to 50 °C while the steel rod remains at 20 °C.
Assuming that no stresses were present before the temperature change,

i. Determine the deflection at cylinder BD.

ii. Determine the stress in the cylinder.

Rod AC: Steel Cylinder BD: Brass

Rod AC: Keluli Silinder BD: Tembaga
E= 200 GPa E = 105 GPa
α= 11.7 x 10-6 /°C α= 20.9 x 10-6 /°C

QUESTION 2

Determine the values of the stress in portions AC and CB of the steel bar shown in figure 2 shown
the temperature of the bar is -45°C and knowing that a close fit exist at both of the rigid supports
when the temperature is +24°C. Use the values E= 200GPa and α= 11.7 x 10-6 /°C for steel.

a) Find the change of temparature and deformation of length of steel bar.

b) Determine the values of the stress in portions AC and CB of the steel bar

QUESTION 3

a) The torque shown in figure 2 are exerted on pulleys B, C, and D. Knowing that the entire shaft
is made of aluminum ( G= 27 GPa), determine the angle of twist between
i. C and B
ii. D and B

QUESTION 4

a) A hollow cylindrical steel shaft is 1.5 m long and has inner and outer diameters respectively
equal to 40 and 60 mm as shown in figure 4.

i. What is the largest torque that can be applied to the shaft it the shearing stress is not
exceed 120 MPa.
ii. What is the corresponding minimum value of the sharing stress in the shaft.

iii. What torque should be applied to the end of the shaft as shown in Figure 2 to produce
a twist of 2°? Use the value G= 77 GPafor the steel.
