Chanhassen High School

Stormbots

Sponsorship Packet

We are the Stormbots, a robotics team from Chanhassen High School. Currently, we
participate in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a program in which participants
design, build, and program a robot to complete specific tasks and challenges. Our team
was originally founded as an FLL team back in 2008, with the core members of that
original team continuing on to form the Stormbots FRC team in 2013. Although this core
group has now graduated and proceeded on to college (all majoring in STEM), their
knowledge, skills and passion have been passed down to the younger students of the
team and it continues to drive our team today.

In our past few seasons, the team has worked diligently to create a name for itself, not
only in the robotics community, but in our local community as well. Through outreach
events (participating in the Bluff Creek Elementary STEM Day, having a float in the
Fourth of July and Homecoming parades and holding demos at community events like
Volksfest and the Victoria Halloween Party) and fundraisers (partnering with Davannis
and running a brat stand at Von Hansons Meats) the team has not only immersed itself
in the surrounding community, but also maintained a positive image and standing within
the community.

Our goal for the upcoming season is broad, yet simple. Firstly, we hope to build a
complex, competitive robot that will help us qualify for the World Championships and/
or State Championships. Secondly, and more importantly, we wish to continue to uphold
the positive image we have built within our community. Finally, we strive to be a team
with open arms where any interested student, no matter what level of availability and
commitment, is welcome and where all members, at the end of the season, have not
only continued to learn and grow, but are more inspired to pursue a career in science or
technology.

FRC (First Robotics Competition) is a high school robotics program in which

participants design, prototype, and build a robot approximately the size of a household
dishwasher during a six week build season from the beginning of January to the middle
of February. FRC provides an opportunity for participants to gain valuable skills in
engineering, teamwork, marketing, programming, finance, and time management.

FTC (First Tech Challenge) is a middle through high school robotics program which
encompasses many of the same learning opportunities of FRC while building a
smaller robot made from pre-fabricated parts. This program provides a gateway to
participating in FRC since many of the skills overlap. These teams are smaller (4-8
people), and also allow for students who dont have the time available to participate in
FRC to still work with robots.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) is an international

organization which founded these annual robotics competitions to inspire students to
pursue science and engineering careers. Combining STEM education curriculum with
sporting event-like tournaments makes these competitions very exciting. Along the
way, participants practice and learn skills that are important for all engineering teams,
such as public speaking, technical presentation skills, teamwork and cooperation with
teammates as well as competitors.

Running this years season requires substantial funding from sponsors such as you.
While $40,000 might seem like a lot to fund a high school robotics team, much of this
amount covers our tournaments and costs associated with them. This year, we would
like to go to the regional tournament in Minneapolis. This tournament gives us our best
chance at qualifying for the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, where the best teams from
around the world compete. We include this tournament in this years budget because
after qualifying in 2014, we found that there is a very short amount of time between a
regional tournament and which the funds for this tournament must be raised. The other
estimated costs are consistent with what we spent last season.
