Course Description:

This course covers basic concepts and modern techniques of M&S (modeling & simulation) for the
analysis and design of discrete event systems in manufacturing, materials handling, transportation, and
service sectors. Key topics include 1) concepts of computer simulation, 2) concepts and methods of
discrete event system M&S, 3) input modeling, 4) event graph modeling of manufacturing and service
systems, 5) concepts and methods of activity-based M&S, 6) activity-based modeling of manufacturing
and service systems, 7) output analysis and simulation optimization, and 8) introduction to state-based
modeling and simulation. Case studies will be conducted using commercial simulation packages
SIGMA, ACE++, and ARENA.
