Homework 9 : Prototype
November 27, 2016

Realisation
The prototype of the case for REST was laser cut and engraved into 4mm
plywood. Since I didnt have access to a laser cutter and to the electronic prototype,
I sent the laser-cut files and guidelines to the REST team in Paris, France. They have
access to the Fablab for which I work and could build the prototype. I have made
some few changes between the project REST laser-cut v3.pdf and project
REST laser-cut v4.pdf files attached, to translate it into French, and to match
the components they had.
The iterations on the prototype are fast and cheap to make. One should only
modify the layout vector file, and send it to the laser-cutter to print onto a piece of
plywood. Parts are then glued together, and the electronic parts are screwed in place.

Pictures of the prototype can be seen in photographs below. Also, the video
REST UX prototype.mpeg1 attached demonstrate the interactions with the proto-
type, and shows an accelerated footage of the making.

Characteristics
The prototyped turned out great. The wood gives a lightweight, yet sturdy
and noble design. Dierent woods are available to oer various aspects, and the
laser-engravings are incredibly sharp and precise.
As expected, the case stands easily into both flat and upright positions.
