Executive summary

A travel agency is a private retailer or public service that provides travel and tourism related
services to the public on behalf of suppliers such as activities, airlines, car rentals, cruise lines,
hotels, railways, travel insurance, and package tours. In addition to dealing with ordinary tourists
most travel agencies have a separate department devoted to making travel arrangements for
business travelers and some travel agencies specialize in commercial and business travel only.

Travelsmith is a travel agency that operates with inbound tourism only. It also serves as general
sales agents for foreign travel companies, allowing them to have offices in countries other than
where their headquarters are located. Travelsmith does not provide a wide range of the tourists
spots that can be visited in Goa, it has limited places and itineraries for the customers, therefore
the main purpose of this project is to provide maximum coverage of the tourists spots in goa and
also showcase the different festivals that are been held in goa with gaiety. Different itineraries
have been designed in the project that include the heritage monuments and cultural festivals of
goa.
A travel agency's main function is to act as an agent, selling travel products and services on
behalf of a supplier. A package holiday or a ticket is not purchased from a supplier unless a
customer requests that purchase. The holiday or ticket is supplied to the agency at a discount.
The profit is therefore the difference between the advertised price which the customer pays and
the discounted price at which it is supplied to the agent. In many countries, all individuals or
companies that sell tickets are required to be licensed as a travel agent.

INDUSTRY BACKGROUND

2
Travel and tourism is the largest service industry globally in terms of gross revenue and foreign
exchange earnings. It is also one of the largest employment generators in the world. It has been a
major social phenomenon and is driven by social, religious, recreational, knowledge seeking and
business interests and motivated by the human urge for new experience, adventure, education,
and entertainment. Tourism is both cause and consequence of economic development. It has the
potential to stimulate other sectors in the economy owing to cross-synergistic benefits and its
backward and forward linkages.

The hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes
lodging, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the
tourism industry. The hospitality industry is a multi-billion dollar industry that depends on the
availability of leisure time and disposable income. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel,
or an amusement park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance and direct
operations (servers, housekeepers, porters, kitchen workers, bartenders, management, marketing,
and human resources etc.).

Travel and tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries and a leader in many countries. Indian
tourism offers most diverse products globally. The countrys rich history, cultural heritage,
beauty, diversity of religion and medicine fascinate budget and luxury travelers. Tourism in India
has registered significant growth over the years. This has been led by growth in both leisure and
business tourism. Rising incomes, increasing affordability, growing aspirations, increasing
globalization, and a growing airline industry along with improvement in travel-related

San jao: It is the feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24th. On this day young men around Goa
jump into wells to retrieve gifts thrown in by villagers.
This celebration is called Sao Joao, one of the more famous Christian feasts in the state. The
festivals takes place at the beginning of Monsoon season in Goa and people of all ages jumping
into wells, streams and ponds. This feast is the main highlight of this itinerary. San Joao, like any
other Goan feast has that captivating spirit of merriment, colour and tradition.

People dressed in colourful outfits from several villages meet near a stream front in carnival-
coloured boats and floats. It is akin to the Carnival in few ways. The tourists visiting this festival

6
will be taken on a boat ride that has been decorated by the villagers so that they can enjoy
themselves and feel that they are apart of the festival.

Mae De Deus Church (Saligao): The exquisite wooden statue of Mae De Deus is a beautiful
example of Goan workmanship painted in golden colour. This wooden statue was originally from
the Mae De Deus Church of Daujim-Old Goa and was taken ceremoniously in a decorated boat
across the Mandovi River to Betim, and in a flower bedecked bullock cart over to Pilerne.

The statue was installed in the church. All the black stones which adorn the church in several
places were excavated from the site of the Mae De Deus convent in Daujim-Old Goa.

St. Antony Church (Siolim): the san jao festival is celebrated mostly near the St. Anthony
church. Siolim's church is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. The church possesses two steeples
on the frontispiece and a statue of St Anthony holding a serpent on a leash. This is a depiction of
the incident which occurred during the construction of the church wherein a snake that was
disrupting construction work. The people turned to St. Anthony for help, and placed his statue at
the construction site. The next morning, the snake was found caught in the cord placed in the
statue's hand. In the church, the statues, paintings, and even the church bell, depict St. Anthony
holding a serpent tied with a cord to commemorate this miracle.

Baga beach: Baga Beach is a popular beach and tourist destination in North Goa. The beach
contains rows of shacks and fishing boats, and at high tide the beach is narrow. The beach is
named after the Baga Creek, which empties into the Arabian Sea at the north end of the beach.
Baga Beach is also famous for water sports such as parasailing and banana rides, and dolphin
cruises. In Baga Beach, new parking has been constructed for around 800 cars or more, and there
is baga creek bridge which connects northern part like arpora, anjuna etc.

The Bonderam festival: The Bonderam festival is the main highlight of this tour. Bonderam
Festival, also known as Bonderam Flag Carnival, is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of August.
This year Bonderam Festival will be held on August 27. People of Divar Island start preparing
for Bonderam festival from the crack of the dawn. Music drifts through the village. The festival
begins at around noon. The celebration starts with a Flag parade from the main junction of Divar
Island. The Bonderam festival is declared open after the Flag Parade. The celebration continues,
after the opening ceremony, with fancy dress competition and traditional float parade.

Churches of old Goa: Bom jesus basilica: The Basilica of Bom Jesus or Borea Jezuchi Bajilika
(Portuguese: Baslica do Bom Jesus) is located in Goa, India, and is a UNESCO World Heritage

9
Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is located in Old
Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rule.

'Bom Jesus' (literally, 'Good (or Holy) Jesus') is the name used for the Ecce Homo in the
countries of Portuguese colonization. The Jesuit church is Indias first minor basilica, and is
considered to be one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India.

Se cathedral: The S Catedral de Santa Catarina, known as Se Cathedral, is the cathedral of the
Latin Rite Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and the seat of the Patriarch of the
East Indies. It is located in Old Goa, India.

St. Cajetan church: Defying the norms, this Church was built by a few Greek and Italian priests
at the turn of the 17th Century. This Church was modeled on St. Peters Basilica in Rome and
stands in start contrast to the rest of the Churches built in the Portuguese era. Despite being over
300 years old, the structure is well preserved, presumably due to the lack of tourist attention to
this masterpiece.

Viceroys arc: This archway, known as the Viceroys Arch, was erected by Vasco da Gamas
grandson, Francisco da Gama, who became viceroy in 1597. On the side facing the river the arch
(which was restored in 1954 following a collapse) is ornamented with the deer emblem on Vasco
da Gamas coat of arms. Above it in the centre of the archway is a statue of da Gama himself.

the independence of Goa. During the Portugal rule, the fort was rebuilt and also had underground
tunnels in order to help in an escape during a siege

Fontainhas (or Bairro das Fontainhas, in Portuguese) is an old Latin Quarter in Panjim,
capital city of the state of Goa, India. It maintains to this day its Portuguese influence, namely at
the architectonic level, such as narrow and pretty winding streets as found in many European
cities, old villas and buildings with projecting balconies painted in the traditional tones of pale
yellow, green, or blue, and roofs made of red coloured tiles. The Fontainhas's heritage ambiance
represents the traditional Portuguese influence in the area.

Mallikarjuna Temple: The ancient temple of Shri Mallikarjun is located near the small village of
Sristhal, in the southernmost taluka of Canacona. Sristhal is about 5 km drive away from the taluka.
The temple lies in an enchanting location in a valley, completely surrounded by blue mountains and
greenery. The temple itself is at least 200 years old, as per the writing on a plaque near the temple
dome. The temple is dedicated to Shri Mallikarjun who is yet another incarnation of Lord Shiva and he

18
is also known as Adavat Sinhasanadhishwar Mahapati Canacona among the locals. According to
legend, the location of the temple is supposed to be the place where Lord Shiva met his consort
Parvati after a long separation

Sri Chandranath Temple: The ancient Chandreshwar Temple also known as the Chandranath
Temple and is situated on the road to Quepem, about 14 km from Margao. It is located on the
Chandranath .
According to an ancient Sanskrit inscription, a temple has stood on this magical spot for nearly 2500
years. However, the present building, dedicated to Shiva, is comparatively modern, dating from the
late 1600s. The only part of the shrine that is definitely a vestige of the Vedic age is its cavernous
inner sanctum, hollowed from a hug back bolder, around which the site's seventeenth-century
custodians erected a typically Goan-style structure, capped with a red-tile room and domed sanctuary
tower.

Colva Beach: stretches for around 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi), part of a beach consisting of about

food stalls, restaurants, pubs and bars. The beaches are constantly monitored by lifeguards, and
the swimming areas are flagged for warnings. Colva's nightlife is livelier and vibrant than
anywhere else in south Goa. The two most happening nightspots are down in the dunes south of
the beachfront area: splash boasts a big MTV satellite screen and music to match, and a late bar
and disco energize and rock crowds around 10.00 pm.

The Three Kings Feast: The Three Kings Feast is one of most popular and favorite holidays of
Goa citizens and tourists who are lucky ones to watch this amazing festival. The famous grand
holiday is celebrated every year on January 6th by local Christians as well as by the Hindus in all
parts of Goa, and especially in Cansaulim, Arossim and Quelim resorts.

The festival is dedicated to Three Kings of Magi who came with their gifts to infant Jesus the
Christ. According to the legend, a boulder on a nearby hill has two sets of footprints: one for
infant and one for adult. Virgin Mary and the infant rested there in order to let their horse quench
its thirst.

The whole event is accompanied by loud music and dances. Lots of people are coming to the Hill
to watch the procession and the ritual of gifts giving. Amazing fair is conducted during the whole
festival: people eat, drink, buy gifts, souvenirs, spices made by local Goa craftsmen and simply
have fun from dawn till dusk.

Rachol Seminary: The sprawling quadrangular building, housing now the Seminary, was
constructed by the Jesuits. The foundation stone in order to build a Church and a College was
blessed and laid on 1st November 1606. Rachol is about 7 kms from the commercial town of

21
Margao, in Salcette taluka. On the top of a small hillock near Rachol and the small village of
Raia, lies the famous Seminary surrounded by the remains of a moat of an old Muslim fort and
unending vistas of rice fields.

The Rachol Seminary is visited by tourists all the year. The reason truly is its unique architecture.
You will find a very well carved statue of Saint Constantine, the first Roman Emperor who got
converted to Christianity. It also has an amazingly carved and gilded main altarpiece which will
make you visit the place again. The seminary housed the Museum of Christian Art which
displayed the church artifacts and these were collected from all corners of Goa.

Braganza house : The Menezes Braganza Pereira house is located at the Chandor village in
Goa. It is known to be more than 350 years old and is situated near the church square in Chandor.
This mansion is the most exquisite heritage house in the countryside, the biggest in Goa and also
has a Portuguese style facade. It is a museum of chandeliers, painting, porcelain, crystal, period
furniture and other antique items.

The Portuguese style outer facade that gives entry to both wings of the mansion with 24 windows
is the longest in Goa. The house made up of laterite has a garden with mosaic seats, tables and
fountains. A nail of St. Francis Xavier is held by the Petite Chapel that is still used in the
Braganza Periera House. Two chairs bearing the coat of arms gifted by the Portuguese king are
there in the

There is no entry fee and tourists can visit the house any day between 9 am to 5 pm. For the
maintenance of this palatial heritage mansion, there is a small box where you can leave some
money at your discretion.

Rivona caves: Situated in Rivona, the caves are Buddhist in origin dating back to the 6th century
AD. Carved out of a massive laterite rock hill. Really an anthropological mystery, their Buddhist
origin is currently a matter of speculation.
However, during the era of Chandragupta and Kadamba, Rivona, given the presence of hot
springs, fresh flowing water and dense forests, was a hideaway for the Buddhists following the
decline of Buddhism.

22
Though a largely bare structure, there is a pitha inside, possibly used by the Buddhist teachers
and gurus for teaching and meditation.
Also known as the Pandava caves after the popular belief thats says they took refuge here during
their exile, drawings of animals and birds on the laterite rocks can be found, considered to be
dating back from the time much before even the birth of Christ. The fresh hot springs that must
have drawn the Buddhits and Pandavas to this spot still exist and within a radius of 2 square km

Highlights

Lairai Jatra: This is one of the more famous and more unusual Jatra (Hindu temple festival)
celebrated in Goa. Shirgao is a small town in Bicholim taluka, east of Mapusa. The Shirgao Jatra
is famous among devotees and tourists alike for the celebrated walk on hot coals raked from an
enormous-bonfire.
The Jatra takes place in early part of May, when thousands of devotees of Devi Lairai descend on
the small town and religious rituals and poojas dedicated to the Goddess are performed
throughout the auspicious day.

The dance sessions end around midnight when all eyes are on the huge pile of wood kept in a
large clearing near the temple. The final and most spectacular part of the Jatra then begins, when
a specially chosen person races from the temple to the wooden pile and lights a massive bonfire
with a blazing torch.

In the early hours of the morning when the fire has died down, the raking of the coals begins.
The devotees await their turn to walk on the holy path of hot coals. Around 4 a.m., the actual
ritual starts, with the devotees running through the hot coals carrying their sticks and shouting
the name

Baga night flea market: Shopping at Baga Saturday night flea market is one of the most
popular time pass for tourists in Goa.

24
There are innumerable shacks and stalls, brightly lit under the gorgeous night sky, selling
everything from clothes to goodies and treats, bric-a-brac, trinkets, jewelry, and handicrafts.
However, USP of the market are beach-side saloons where you can get a trendy haircut, the tarot
card readers or palmists from whom you can know your future and the terrace cafes and shacks
that serve everything from coffee to pork vindaloo.

Aguada fort: The Aguada Fort is located at a distance of around 18 kms. from Panaji.Fort
Aguada is located atop a hilltop near the mouth of the river Mandovi. The fort was named
Aguada which means water in Portuguese because of the presence of three freshwater springs
inside. This fort was constructed in the year 1612. Durings its use, ships would stop at the lower
fort for supplies and water.

Aguada fort has an elaborate defense system and was heavily armed and fortified during the
Portuguese rule

Reis mangos fort: The fort of Reis Magos is located to the extreme south of the Bardez taluka at
the northern bank of the river Mandovi. This fort was built by the Portuguese Viceroy Afonso de
Noronha between 1551 and 1554 and was again rebuilt in 1703 and played an important part in

26
the defense of Goa in 1739, against the Marathas.Only the Reis Magos Fort and the Aguada Fort
were left in the hands of the Portuguese. The fort is strategically located at the mouth of the
Mandovi river and was meant to thwart any attack on the city of Panaji by Sea.

Basilica of Bom Jesus :Churches of old Goa: Bom jesus basilica: The Basilica of Bom Jesus or
Borea Jezuchi Bajilika (Portuguese: Baslica do Bom Jesus) is located in Goa, India, and is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The
church is located in Old Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rule.

Mangesh Temple: The Shri Mangeshi Temple is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is
considered to be the most important temple in Goa, it belongs to the typical Goan Hindu temple
style of architecture. It is very distinctive with its white towers, welcoming at the entrance even
though it is small and exquisite.
It is located on a Hillock at Proil which is in the Ponda Taluka, surrounded with lush greenery
which creates a separate place in the hearts of the onlookers. It is 22 kms from Panjim and 26
kms from Margao. It is one of the largest, wealthiest and most frequently visited temples in Goa.

27
Safa Masjid: On the outskirts of the Ponda town is located the historic Safa Masjid or The Shifa
Shahourie Masjid. This Islamic ecclesiastical structure is a historian's delight. The Safa Masjid of
Ponda is a very pertinent representative of medieval Goa's history and culture.

Infact, the hustling modern town life of Ponda has not affected the serene, sublime and elegant
period look of this great mosque. It has withstood the ravages of time attracting a large number
of Muslim devotees, historians, tourists both domestic and foreign, and has been noted as an
important heritage monument of Goa and India.

Goa chitra: An ethnographical museum is a reflection of civilizations, whether or not

technically advanced. In planning the museum importance is given to the concept that the
Implements represent the lifestyle of a people, their indigenous methods, their craftsmanship,
their art and folklore. The original 200 privately collected items have grown to more than 4000
objects on display. The Museum nevertheless preserves its universality in its collections of
artifacts representing the culture of ancient Goa.

Braganza house: The Menezes Braganza Pereira house is located at the Chandor village in Goa.
It is known to be more than 350 years old and is situated near the church square in Chandor. This
mansion is the most exquisite heritage house in the countryside, the biggest in Goa and also has a
Portuguese style facade.

Sri Chandranath Temple: The ancient Chandreshwar Temple also known as the Chandranath
Temple and is situated on the road to Quepem, about 14 km from Margao. It is located on the
According to an ancient Sanskrit inscription, a temple has stood on this magical spot for nearly
2500 years. However, the present building, dedicated to Shiva, is comparatively modern, dating
from the late 1600s. The only part of the shrine that is definitely a vestige of the Vedic age is its
cavernous inner sanctum, hollowed from a hug back bolder, around which the site's seventeenth-
century custodians erected a typically Goan-style structure, capped with a red-tile room and
domed sanctuary tower.

Cabo da Rama fort: Located in Canacona taluka Cabo da Rama - Cape Rama -, takes its name
from Rama, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana, who, along with his wife Sita holed up here
during his exile from Ayodhya. The promontory was crowned by a fort centuries before the
Portuguese cruised in and wrested it from the local Hindu rulers in 1763. The fortress on this site
was held by various rulers for many years, and it was in 1763 that it was gained by the
Portuguese from the Raja of Sonda. It was subsequently rebuilt, and what remains today,
including the rusty cannons, is entirely Portuguese. Although the fort saw no real action after the
rebuild, it was briefly occupied by British troops.
Palolem Beach: Palolem Beach is situated in Canacona in southern Goa, India. Palolem is one
of the beautiful beaches. A natural bay surrounded by lofty headlands on either side. This results
in a calm, idyllic sea with a gently sloping bed that allows you to walk up to 100 m out from the
beach This beach is one of the most famous beaches in Goa. This beach is famous for parties and
night life.
