Abstract
HbandPCVvalueswerestudiedinthreegroupsofAddisAbabawomenduringtheirlastmonthof
pregnancyandcomparedwiththoseinacontrolgroupofnonpregnantAddisAbabawomen.
Irrespectiveofsocioeconomicgroupandparity,theHbandPCVvalueswerealmostidenticalinall
fourgroups.Inoneofthethreetestgroups,agroupof'nonprivileged'multiparae,Siron,S
transferrin(TIBC),SfolateandSvitaminB12werealsoexaminedandshowednormalvalues.
Thesefindingsindicateararitynotonlyoftrueanaemiabutalsoof'physiologicalanaemiaof
pregnancy'.Thislattermaynot,therefore,beanadaptivephenomenonofregularoccurrenceas
hasusuallybeenassumedhitherto.Theexplanationfortheaberranthaematologicalbehaviorin
pregnantwomenlivinginhighlandEthiopiaisprobablythelifelongexposuretoaveryhighiron
intakecombinedwithhypoxiaduetothehighaltitude.
