Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this health issues paper is to examine a controversial debated issue and
present both sides equally. The issue this paper will discuss is the neonatal controversial topic of
circumcision.

Student Approach to Assignment


The approach to this assignment will discuss what caused the issue of circumcision and
why is it of concern, as well as identify what audience should be interested in this topic. The
paper also inquires both sides of arguments in favor of circumcision and arguments opposing
circumcision.

Reason for Inclusion of the Assignment in the Portfolio


This assignment is included in the portfolio because it demonstrates integration of a wide variety
of end of program behaviors.

Communication
Accesses and utilizes data and information from a wide range of sources to enhance
patient and professional communication.
Example: Throughout this paper, it was necessary to access and utilize data and
information from a wide range of sources in order to inquire about both arguments.
This was imperative in regards to communicating the actual procedure of how it is
performed and the pros and cons to circumcision to the families of the neonates.

Produces clear, accurate, and relevant writing using correct grammar, spelling and
punctuation.
Example: Throughout this health issues paper it was necessary to produce clear,
accurate, and relevant writing to integrate the knowledge from the humanities and
sciences, including nursing research to formulate a paper that inquires about two
sides of a health issue.

Teaching
Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance ones own
knowledge base.
Example: It was necessary to use information technologies and other appropriate
methods to enhance my knowledge base. I needed to enhance my knowledge base in
order to be able to educate parents in future situations with accurate information of
the benefits and risks of circumcision so they can make an informed decision. In
addition, as a nurse, a critical role is played to serve as an advocate and liason
between parents and health care team. So having a good knowledge base was
necessary throughout this paper.

Leadership
Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse a member of the
interdisciplinary health care team.
Example: In this paper, I discussed a nursing study that was done to study parental
decision making in male circumcision. The study consisted of close-ended survey
responses were analyzed through factor analysis to ascertain what types of beliefs
parents used in their decision making, whether they felt they had enough information,
and who first asked them about their decision. The results were that nurses were most
likely to be the first health care professional to ask parents about circumcision. With
that being said, nurses play a critical role in acquisition of knowledge surrounding
male circumcision and serve as an important liaison between parents and the proxy
consent process.

Professionalism
Understands the effect of legal and regulatory processes on nursing practice and health
care delivery, as well as limits to ones own scope of practice.
Example: In this aspect, professionalism in this sense was demonstrated in regards to
discussing the nurse and their scope of practice throughout this health issues paper. As
previously mentioned, the nurse is an important liason between parents and the legal
proxy consent process, therefore it is important that I understood the legal process on
this nursing practice and health care delivery.

Culture
Demonstrates sensitivity to personal and cultural definitions of health, and how beliefs
influence an individuals reactions to the illness experience or end of life.
Example: In this paper, I discussed a variety of circumstances in which it was
necessary to demonstrate sensitivity of individuals personal and cultural definitions
of health. For example, I stated that many individuals support circumcision because
of their cultural beliefs. Both the Jewish and Islamic faiths practice circumcision as a
statement of faith and belonging or an act of purification and hygiene. In addition,
some tribes in West Africa use circumcision as part of an initiation ceremony for
young boys to mark their passage from boyhood to manhood.
