protect the final product from undesired moisture or surface changes. Adsorption by a molecular
sieve is used for the drying process.
Drying wheel
Plastics industry, describes a round container for the drying of air, the bottom component in multiple
drying cells. These drying cells are filled with drying agent.
E
EC Declaration of Conformity
The EC Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is a document that must be supplied with products in which
the manufacturer or its authorised representative within the European Economic Area (EEA)
declares that the product meets all requirements of applicable legislation. The declaration must
also contain the name and address of the manufacturer, as well as product information such as
trademark and serial number. The declaration must be signed by a single person employed by the
manufacturer or their authorised representative and this person's role in their company must be
specified. (Source ec.europa.eu, EU Commission FAQ)

G
Glossary
An alphabetically ordered compilation of technical terms with explanations.
I
Index
Describes a tabular listing which helps the user obtain a quick overview. The sole classification
criterion for an index is the alphabet. A main keyword can be allocated to several sub-keywords
Instructed personnel
Persons who have been informed on the tasks assigned to them and the possible danger from
improper behavior by a specialist and trained if required, and who have been instructed on the
necessary protective devices and protective measures. Definition according to EN 60204-1.
Intended usage
Usage of a machine in accordance with the specifications in the operating manual. This is
understood as the use of devices, protection systems and installations in accordance with the
equipment group and category and in compliance with all of the manufacturer's specifications
required for the safe operation of the devices, protection systems and installations. Definition
according to MRL 2006/42/EC.
M
Mandatory signs
>>Mandatory signs convey a request for action and service to prevent accidents. They are round
and have a blue basic colour with a white edge. The icon is also displayed in white. A safety sign
that requires a specific behaviour. <<, Excerpt from iso.de and DIN ISO 3864-1-2012-06, chapter
3.5.
Module
Systems and mechanical engineering, designates a component of an installation or system without
which the overall system cannot function or only function on a limited basis.g A module is seen as
a part of the device / machine.
Mould
A component in injection moulding machines. To produce a product, shapeless material (here
granulate) is shaped as desired by using a form, called the mould, and different procedures.
These moulds are generally made of aluminium or steel
N
Network protocol
Information technology, telecommunication, provides a simplified description of a set of rules that is
used by devices and systems, programs and operating systems, to exchange data packages
between systems. (Source www.wikipedia.org). ,
O
Offset value
In the technical area, this is a specified, adjustable value of a condition size or measured value. The
pre-defined value may deviate upwards or downwards from the actual value.
Operating hours counter
The operating hours counter is an electronic meter and determines the active operating time of the
device. Defined intervals can be used to specify how long a device can remain in operation
without damage
Operating instructions
Operating instructions describe the complete service life of a machine or device such as unpacking,
installation, operation, maintenance, cleaning, shut-down, etc.
Operating unit
The control unit serves as an interface between humans and machine to enable operating,
monitoring, intervention or control. The control unit can be a part of the machine. At WITTMANN,
the operating unit is either installed in the device / machine or flexible (portable remote control).
There is no difference in handling and/or functionality.
Operator
The person using an existing authorisation by reason of personal rights (e.g. ownership, rental
agreement) to exert a decisive influence on the construction, quality, operation and shutdown of a
system and who bears at least part of the costs shall be deemed the operator (Source
P
Personal protective equipment
Special device or instrument designed to be held/worn by an individual for protection against one or
several health and safety hazards. Definition according to NORM EN 82079-1.
PID-controller
Control technology, settings for PID controllers (proportional-integral-derivative), with P controlling
according to the deviation from the target value, I according to the total of deviations of a specific
time range and D controlling according to the speed with which the deviation from the target value
per time changes. (Source www.mikrocontoller.net).
Preparation
Describes work steps already carried out in advance to enable the following activities to be
performed quickly and securely.
Prerequisite
This condition must be met for the following activities to be performed without difficulties.
Process heating
Plastics industry, dryer. Air for the subsequent drying process is heated up here.

R
Reasonably foreseeable misuse
Use of a machine in a manner not intended according to the operating instructions that can result
from easily foreseeable human behavior. Definition according to MRL 2006/42/EC.
S
Safety devices
Also referred to as protective devices
Sensor
Abbreviation for measuring sensor, describes a technical component which can record certain
physical or chemical properties and/or the material composition of its surroundings. These
parameters are converted into an electrical signal

SI units
The international unit system SI (for French Systme international d'units), is the unit system
based on the international unit system (ISQ). This metrical unit system is now the globally most
common unit system for physical sizes. Physical units are specified for selected values. (Source
Side channel compressor
A quick rotating shovel impeller is used to suck up air which is then pressed to the outside by
centrifugal forces, thereby creating a compaction. The air then flows back to the inside through
the side channel and is further compressed by two additional shovels. The second compression
makes it possible to generate differential pressures.
SmartFlow flap
Dryer, a mechanical part that optimally adjusts the circulating air volume to consumption. The
SmartFlow flap protects from over-drying and saves energy. (Source Functional description of
SmartFlow flap).
Soft-Off mode
The device is linked with aoperating unit. The device is ready to operate. It is supplied with energy
(electricity in this case) (The LED ring flashes white). The device is not in the production cycle.
Spare part
Designates parts which can be completely replaced in defective devices without the need to
separately manufacture new ones. They have the same quality as the original part. Detailed
