Because of shifts in consumption habits and rising populations, the world is confronted with the problem of increasing volumes of waste. Over the last two decades, per capita waste production by developed countries has risen threefold, which is five to six times higher than in developing countries. Waste accumulation is an issue, particularly in poor countries where, due to financial and management problems, the capacity to handle waste is limited. Due to the growing population and living standards, waste production in developing countries is also expected to increase. The municipal office in the Philippines is responsible for the solid waste disposal of its constituents. For both public health and environmental reasons, the management of waste from collection, storage, refining, transport and disposal is important. Waste is referred to as something discarded by a person, household, or organization that consists of a complex mixture of distinct substances of which some are ultimately harmful to health. The problem of waste management had always been the burden of the local government unit. However, such burden cannot be carried alone by most of the municipalities, and most of them had failed in the implementation of the management plan. There are several reasons for the failure in the implementation of the waste management. These include limited financial resources, lack of political will, lack of technical knowledge about recent technologies, and lack of cooperation and participation of the community Human activities produce waste and it is the manner in which such waste is treated, stored, processed and disposed of that may pose risks to the environment and public health. Waste Management issues and problems are of immediate importance in urban areas, especially in the rapidly urbanizing cities of the developing world. The treatment of waste in the Barangay Guihing specifically in Junsay Compound is one of the most contentious. Ecological problems. The growth in the population of the community and the industrialization of more communities have contributed to an alarming increase in the amount of waste due to the high consumption of materials. Uncontrolled disposal and overflowing landfills have also been brought on by the changing characteristics of waste. Before the waste is collected, waste separation at the source is very important. They become polluted and useless when waste is mixed, therefore requiring more methods and higher costs to handle. If waste is isolated at the source, more efficient management methods such as reuse, recycle, and composting are more modifiable. Usually, one to two thirds of the produced waste are not collected. As a result, uncollected waste is poured indiscriminately into the streets and streams, sometimes mixed with human and animal excreta, thereby leading to flooding, insect and rodent breeding and the spread of diseases. In addition, even collected waste is frequently disposed of, polluting water supplies and air, in unregulated dumpsites and/or burned.
II. Project Design
To address the issue of waste managementIt Trash Can to Trash Bin will be made it is an innovative and ultramodern way of recycling its main component, the water bottle that promotes to turn trash into cash and thereby saving mother earth. This cost-efficient trash bin primarily functions as trash collector that could be flexibly used as indoor or outdoor facility. Trash to Trash Bin is an innovative and recycled trash bin which is used mainly for collecting and storing of garbage. It is made of recycled materials which clearly defines the main idea on reducing the garbage or wastes generated every day of the people thus it helps to conserve the environment. And the other project will be the Clean Up Day the Community will be having a Clean-Up Day all of the social classes can be involved in the clean-up day. The activity should be undertaken monthly. Youth can also be involved so that they will develop the habit and behavior of cleanliness and concern for the environment. The said activity can also bring back the traditional “bayanihan” of the community and also, Implement Proper waste management practice like Waste Segregation. Based on the survey, recyclable materials are separated from the solid waste and are sold to junk shop collectors by almost all of the respondents under the resident of junsay compound. When asked which of the recyclable materials is being re- used, most of the respondents in the community were re-using glass bottles, plastic bottles, and paper. Very few are reusing plastic bags and metal cans. This only means that plastics and metal cans go with all other solid waste. This is being affirmed by key informants, who reported that solid wastes of household are mixed and unsegregated. This would also mean that segregation of solid waste does not matter whether which social class the individual belongs; all of them are not segregating their waste or maybe they are segregating but throwing the solid waste all together to be collected. The community would have separate garbage bin for biodegradable and non- biodegradable solid waste, these are being handled by their household helpers who might mix all the garbage together in time of collection. The actions to do will be the following; first, facilitator will invite the people from the community by posting information about the Waste Management Project via Social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). The date (November 14, 2020) from (8 AM to 12 PM). Second, the facilitator will list down all the names of the people who will be willing to join in the Waste Management Project in order for the facilitator to be aware of the possible number of participants who will join. Lastly, on the day of conducting the activity each of the participants of my project will be cleaning up their own places also they will do the waste management practice and they will be going take pictures as a proof that they participated on the project and as a facilitator I will be going to collect the pictures that they took as part of my project.
