MODULE 2 Project Life Cycle

LESSON 3: Project Success vs. Failure

ACTIVITY
Identify the time zones of the countries in Southeast Asia.

 In Southeast Asia eleven different time zones are used. These time zones span from UTC (GMT) +4 to
UTC (GMT) +10. Several countries offset their local time in increments other than a full hour. As an
example, India is 5 and 1/2 hours ahead of UTC (GMT) time represented as UTC (GMT) +5.5. The
Asian country of Nepal is five hours and forty-five minutes ahead of UTC (GMT) time, represented as
UTC (GMT) + 5.75. Currently, there are four different time zones used by ASEAN countries, such as
UTC+06:30 (Myanmar); UTC+07:00 (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and western Indonesia);
UTC+08:00 (Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, and central Indonesia); and UTC+09:00 (eastern
Indonesia). The proposal would institute UTC+08:00 as the ASEAN Central Time, putting Myanmar at
UTC+07:00, and leaving the less populous eastern Indonesia at UTC+09:00

APPLICATION
Propose a specific project and assume project risks that you may encounter by each phase of the project cycle
and what are your ways to deal with those risks.

Project Name: Hotel De Luna: Renovation of interior design and construction of a new parking lot
Project Risk
Initiation Phase
 The renovation of rooms and construction of new parking lot of Hotel de Luna is a large project and
some materials that are needed must be ordered from other country so, the risk might be the unexpected
delay of materials or equipment because of the possibility that the demand is not available.
In order to deal with it:
 Project Manager should do canvassing of materials
 Project Manager should make sure that the constructions supplies are available and he/she should make
some reservation on it.
Planning Phase
 A large project needs a large amount of funding, so the risk might be the insufficient budget for other
expensive materials that they will encounter along the way.
In order to deal with it:
 Establish efficient communication inside your project team. Frequent status meetings are a must. Their
goal is not only to learn about the project progress but also identify problems, deal with conflicts and
coach your team.
 Loan money to fit the budget of materials the team wanted
 Back to the main goal Quality = Time + Cost

Execution phase
 It’s time to put the plan into action. The implementation phase is often the most gratifying, because
work actually gets done, but it can also be the most frustrating. The details can be tedious and, at times,
overwhelming. And the project risk might be team member’s increased tension and irritability, loss of
enthusiasm, or inability to make decisions properly.
In order to deal with it:
 Pay attention to small signs of emerging problems
 Hold an urgent meeting
