Recycling for Charity and Community Aid

This project involves collecting recyclable materials around Lingayen Gulf and selling them to generate funds to donate to street beggars in need. A group of 6 students will divide into subgroups to collect specific categories of recycled materials over 16 days. The materials will be sorted and sold to junk shops. The funds will then be used to purchase goods like food to distribute to street beggars, helping those in need while also reducing pollution and waste in the community. The project aims to benefit the environment, provide income opportunities, and help address the issue of street begging.

COLLECTING RECYCLED MATERIALS AND DONATING FUNDS TO

STREET BEGGARS

III. Group: I-BSBA-OM-B

IV. Project Duration: 384 Hours (16 Days)

V. Objectives

1. This project aims to reduce the need in creating landfills.

Recycling can be also converted into a new product which helps lessen the waste in which
the chances to make landfills.

2. Conserve our natural resources.

By collecting these materials, we can help the community and reduce the chances of
destroying our natural resources which are vital to our community. Natural resources can be
divided into two categories: renewable and non-renewable. Renewable resources are those that
replenish over time. Air, water, and sunlight are examples. These resources are preferred over
non-renewable ones because the latter do not replenish and are rapidly depleted.

3. Saves Money.

These recyclable wastes have significant value that can be restored or sold for a certain
value. Just as producers can save costs by having recycled materials available for them, the
general public and business owners can help by being sure to buy products made from recycled
materials, especially since there are thousands of products that contain recycled content.
4. Provides help to those in need.

This project aims to be a source of help for those people in need who can barely afford to
buy their daily necessities.

5. Reduce pollution.

Reducing solid waste to make it reusable to raise funds for charity.

VI. Project Description

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

For a multitude of reasons, recycling is required. It not only helps you lower your
carbon footprint, but it also saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and prevents
pollution, among other things. Recycling is critical in today's climate if we want to leave this
planet to future generations. It's good for the environment because we're repurposing outdated
products that are no longer functional. Everything begins at home. If you don't toss away any
of your old products and instead use them for something new, you're recycling. When it comes
to recycling, you should think about the whole picture: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Furthermore,
the recycled materials that we produce can be sold to generate funds for the purchase of new
items and foods to donate to charity.
Lingayen Gulf is one of the tourist attractions in Lingayen, especially on holidays when
a lot of people spend time with their families in the province. In that aspect, the trash disposal
in the Lingayen Gulf is not enough to keep the surroundings clean. As a result, much trash is
scattered everywhere near the shore and walking paths.
Street beggars are often placed in developing countries which is poverty is their most
economic problem. Begging is not a regional problem; rather, it is a global issue that requires
greater attention. It was discovered that in the urban areas, begging is visible in every country
around the world, making it an alarming urban issue. Although it is more prevalent in third-
world countries, the problem of begging is a global one. Begging can have different meanings
depending on the motivation for engaging in begging and the type of people who engage in
begging. Beggars beg for a variety of reasons. Some beggars beg to fulfill a family or societal
ritual, while others beg to fulfill a religious obligation, and the majority of beggars beg due to
financial and economic constraints. (Ali, p. 96)
RATIONALE

Waste is one of the main problems in our community. Poor waste management and
segregation into designated groups such as non-biodegradable and biodegradable are the cause
of this problem. Despite its lack of discipline in throwing garbage, waste can also be a way to
earn money. Plastic bottles and other recyclable materials such as cardboard, old newspaper,
spare parts of appliances, iron, aluminum, and cans.

Most people think that segregating waste is not important because we are not aware of
the hazards of mixed waste. Also, people think that it’s not their responsibility to do so. In
addition, we are not aware of the different cycles of waste which is why we rely on the garbage
pickers in our village. (Sambhus, 2017)

There are lots of effects of poor waste management on our mother earth. It can result to
flood, climate change, and pollution. That is why we came up with the idea of collecting these
recyclable materials to acquire funds and invest in charities, particularly street beggars. For
that reason, we can generate monetary funds in return for cleaning the environment making it
a green community.

Recycling is essential. Recycling is the most effective way to protect and conserve the
world we live in. Re-using old materials can save the energy that will take to create a new
material. (Cleanipedia, 2019). There is no limit to recycling. Recycling programs also benefit
a community's overall health and well-being. Sustainable businesses, or businesses that employ
recycled materials, are more inclined to create relationships or open branches in a community
that values recycling. (Smith, n.d.)

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT

• Mother Earth and Nature

We all know that the most beneficiary of this project is the mother earth and our nature which
is actually on hiatus because of climate change. It can lessen the possibility of floods and
pollution in the environment.
• Can be a way of living

Collecting recyclable materials is common here in our country. It can provide them with
enough funds for their daily living and expenses. Additionally, these collectible recyclable
materials can turn into creative and good business and entrepreneurship business ideas.

• Create a Variety of Outputs

Recyclable materials can be used and created into a new product or output that can be offered
to the market and earn profits.

COVERAGE OF THE PROJECT

• Lingayen Gulf

METHODOLOGY

The group will be divided into subgroups, each subgroup will be assigned to collect a specific
category of recycled materials.

- The recycled materials must be arranged accordingly. Papers will be separated into plastics.

- There would be at least one member who will serve as the guide to where the proposal will
be conducted. That person should know well the area/place.
- Officials of Barangay for solicitation, those who want to donate, and volunteers for
collecting recyclable materials.

- Permits needed, Process how to convert waste materials to money and other things needed.

As a PSU Lingayen students, we intend to devise a program that will benefit those in need as
well as our community. It will also serve as an inspiration to others to create similar activities
in order to promote unity and protect our mother nature in maintaining the cleanliness of the
environment.
