There has been a surge of educational opportunities; yet, according to researchers, there are
profoundly troubling signs that our country has failed in its responsibility to prepare youths. with
strong foundations of literacy, numeracy, and thinking skills to lead productive and prosperous
lives.
According to The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics a strong foundation in
mathematics is increasingly important to our nations economic stability, future national security,
and workforce productivity. In other words, the stability of our society is predicated upon the
mathematical literacy of the citizens. At the core of this process is the teachers and what they do
in the classroom. Someone said that teachers more than any other group are the guardians of
civilization. Therefore, when teachers, the managers of the worlds greatest resource, children,
cry out for greater support, there must be an immediate response.
Indeed, we are aware of the investments and efforts made by officials to support teachers and
improve educational processes throughout the country. However, the current predicament
requires a greater investment.
As a consequence, we therefore appeal to you to take strong action against the lack of support for
the advancement of mathematics. We specifically urge you to initiate the following measures as
recommended by the NCTM:
Support adequate investments in the programs authorized by the
Elementary and Secondary Education Act that serve as the basis of federal
support for local education, including specific programs for STEM (science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics) education and STEM subjects.
Support an increase in Title I funds for the countrys poorest students and
schools, and other efforts to improve schools nationwide that are
inadequately serving their students.
We hope that you will consider these as priority issues in your action plans and policies,
and would welcome further discussion with you on our findings and recommendations.
Sincerely,
