Couple of New Rules?
f(x) = (6x2 3x)(x3 + 5)
True or False f '(x) = (12x 3)(3x2)
Verify your true/false answer by finding f '(x) using rules we know.
f'
g'
When set up this way the Product Rule is the inside + the outside
6x 3 x
f (x)
5x 2
f '(x) =
6x 3 x
f (x) find f '(x)
5x 2
Use same organizing chart. Same inside outside pattern but with and not + and with a denominator.
In The Quotient Rule f(x) must be the numerator and g(x) the denominator and you must start with f '(x).
3x 5 9x 2 x
f (x) find f '(x).

Note: all books show the PR to start with f and not f '. Because of all the multiplication and addition we can
switch orders and therefore have the numerator of the QR look very similar to the PR.

In an algebra class you might say that the above functions are the _____________________________ of two
functions. Not the sum, not the difference, not the product and not the quotient but the _________________.
We can find the derivative of sums, differences, products and quotients but not yet for
________________________.

Now!
We need to decompose the functions to do the calculus.
y = (4x3 2x)20
Call the inside function u and write a u = expression.
u = 4x3 2x
Rewrite the original function in terms of u.
y = u20
Find the derivative of the u = expression and write in Leibniz notation.
du
u = 4x3- 2x so u' or = 12x2 - 2
dx
Find the derivative of the new y = equation write in Leibniz notation.
dy
y = u20 so y ' = = 20u19
du
Then what ?????...
3 x 3 r x r
If and if Leibniz notation can be thought of as a fraction then does
x 7 7 x m m
dy du dy
or y ??
du dx dx
So,
y = (4x3 2x)20
du
u = 4x3- 2x = 12x2 2
dx
dy
y = u20 y ' = = 20u19
du
dy
y' = = 20u19(12x2 2)
dx
But since the original question was in x and y, so must the answer be.
y' = 20u19(12x2 2) and change everything back to y and x: y' = 20(4x3 2x)19(12x2 2)

For two reasons I tend not to use the notation that we used yesterday, when finding the derivative via the
chain rule.
Reason 1: It is really not _______________________.
Reason ___: When the problems get more complex, like f (x) sin 2 (3x 3 x) , this notation becomes
______________.
It is all about the word something, where something is sort of like u.
With this approach even our original problem, f(x) = (4x3 2x)2, may be just as easily solved with The Chain
Rule as it was by expanding.
Notation for chain rule with Newton notation: If h(x) = f(g(x)) then h ' (x) =
