Standard 1 Instructional Leadership

Throughout my practicum experiences, it has been vital to review student data on a continuous
basis to ensure a high standard of rigor of the curriculum taught on our campus. I have visited
classrooms to observe that great instruction was being given with rigor and aligned with the
standards. Ive combed through student assessment data to find student strengths and
weaknesses. When students have not met the required expectations on objectives, then remedial
instruction was put into place (Extended Day). The Extended Day tutoring program was put in
place as an intervention that focuses on math and reading instruction to improve student skills.

Another important aspect of curriculum was going through English Language Learner permanent
records to verify what year monitor status they were or whether they were going to need
TELPAS testing to include writing samples. This is important to ensure our English Language
Learner students are advancing satisfactorily towards exiting the program to monitor status.
Making sure the English Language Learner population is on track and meeting the same
curriculum standards as their peers builds academic strength.

In organizing the fifth-grade field trip I had to ensure that it was appropriately aligned to the
science TEKS. It is an important aspect of student learning to be able to add hands-on
experiences to bolster the curriculum. It took more than contacting the registration office of
Natural Bridge Caverns for the field trip, it also involved coordinating the bus schedules for
transportation and ensuring that money was available in the budget for the field trip. It took a lot
of coordination with the transportation department, the campus secretary who handles the
budget, and setting up the date with the venue.
