Remote Sensing

Chappie

I chose to watch Chappie, to explore the geospatial technology used within the
movie. They use a few different technologies throughout including GPS and remote
sensing. Focusing on remote sensing however, this is used in increments through
the movie, but to progress the story forward, it was used towards the end when
Vincent (Hugh Jackman) took the Moose out to capture Chappie. This was part of
the climax of the story, and without this tech, Deon wouldnt have been shot, and
Chappie wouldnt have had a reason to take him back to Tetravaal to move both of
their conscious into new bodies.
The science behind remote sensing is found in its tools, as remote sensing is an
interaction to observe without physical contact. With the use of satellites, detecting
numerous spectral bands can be very useful for many types of fields, observations,
and studies. The detection that the satellites pick up is the remote sensing, and
from this we can observe countless patterns, energies, and waves. This would be a
more passive form of remote sensing. An active form would be the radiation source
itself emitting energy towards an object, observing it, and then measuring the
reflection back. A common example of this is sonar.
This movie depicted this phenomenon well enough, though it definitely seemed like
it may have been a futuristic use of it, but it also didnt seem too far off from where
were currently at.
