Popplet/Mind Map Activity

Hello class!
We have just spent the last couple class periods learning about Plate Tectonics and completed a Plate
Boundary Lab. Now I would like you to create a mind map on the app Popplet regarding the differences
between continental crustal and oceanic crust. You may use the Plate Tectonic Lecture along with the
guided notes for that lecture, any notes you took for the Plate Tectonics Lab, and each other to
complete the mind map.

The purpose of this exercise is for me to assess your understanding of the differences between the two
distinct types of crustal rocks and their relationships with Plate Tectonics.

Instructions:
You will learn how to create a mind map on the app Popplet, if you have an iPhone or an iPad you can
download the app onto your device and work on it from there! If you dont have any of those devices or
prefer to work on a computer then you just have to go to the following site: http://popplet.com/

Follow these steps to begin creating a Popplet (Note: these may be a little different on your iPhone/iPad
so if you have any issues just let me know as soon as possible).

1. Go to http://popplet.com/
2. Click on the tab on the upper right hand corner titled Log In.
3. Then a pop-up asking for your log in information will appear, click on the bottom where it says
Not a member? Sign up now!
4. Fill in the information and sign-up.
5. This will lead you to a page about Popplet plans. Click on The Free Plan. YOU DO NOT NEED TO
PAY FOR ANYTHING!
6. After you chose the plan it will take you to your home page. Click on make a new popplet to
create a new mind map. Name it Earths Crust and click make it so!
7. From there you will be given a short tutorial on how to add bubbles/squares, how to change the
color of the square/bubble, how to change the text, and how to add images and videos.
8. Create your first square/bubble and label it Earths Crust.
9. Create two other squares/bubbles branching off it. These squares/bubbles should be labeled
Continental Crust and Oceanic Crust and are your starting points for your word map.
10. Please include the following in your Popplet/mind map and make sure you meet the attached
rubric categories as well:
a) 1 video for Continental Crust and 1 video for Oceanic Crust. MAXIMUM 2 VIDEOS.
b) At least 1 image/drawing for Continental Crust and 1 image/drawing for Oceanic Crust.
YOU CAN INCLUDE UP TO 4 IMAGES OR DRAWINGS. (Note: If you decide to include
images or draw something make sure that I can easily understand what you are trying to
represent for that square/bubble by looking at it, if not you will lose points!)
o LOOK UP IMAGES/CLIP ART USING THE FOLLOWING SITES:
o PICS4LEARNING: http://www.pics4learning.com/
o VISUAL DICTIONARY: http://visual.merriam-webster.com/earth.php
o GOOGLE IMAGES (TURN ON SAFETY FEATURE): https://images.google.com/
c) The Words Convergent Boundary and Divergent Boundary appear as individual bubbles
somewhere in the mind map and are associated with the creation/destruction of the
Earths crust. (Example: You might put that crust is destroyed under the square/bubble
Convergent Boundary, which may be connected to the square/bubble Continental
Crust).
d) Include at least 3 facts/information about the Continental Crust and 3 facts/information
for Oceanic Crust related to their ages and plate tectonics. For example: Which crust is
older? Where do you find the oldest continental rock? Which is thinner? Where do you
find convergent or divergent boundaries? Where would you find new crust?
