Product Progress Assessment

Introduction and Statement of Purpose

The goal of my original work is to create a product that will exemplify my

passion for Dermatology. It will be a magazine that features the stories of
numerous patients that have been affected by the field of Dermatology. I
want to capture the information that spans beyond the physical appearance
of an individual. My information will be backed by the knowledge I have
gained from shadowing Dr. Dharamsi for multiple months at her practice in
Lewisville. This magazine not only showcases my passion for Dermatology,
but also provides my mentor with a magazine to display in the lobby of her
office or in other situations at her discretion. I will be able to use this
magazine as a basis on which I can expand upon my knowledge and
research in the field of Dermatology.

Interview Dermatology Patients

Objective
My interviews aim at collecting information about the physical, mental, and
financial impacts of a persons skin condition and essentially a before and
after perspective of a patient that has actually been treated by a
Dermatologist.

Materials

Laptop- to write and organize the information

Phone- to record the meetings
Portfolio- to take notes during the meeting in a professional manner
Photo Information and Release Form- to provide to the interviewees

Meetings/Dates

January 29, 2017- 2:00pm- Aidan Moffett

February 1, 2017- 10:50am- Jennifer Cooper
February 20, 2017- 10:40am- Bailey Bowe
February 28, 2017- 7:30pm- Kaci Pelias
March 13, 2017- 4:00pm- Melissa Duncan

Description of Process

In order to interview each individual, I needed to find people that were

willing to share their story. I first found Aidan Moffett at the ISM Winter
Showcase, where he came up to my display board intrigued by my topic
area. His mother then told me about his expansive experience with
Dermatology, and they were willing to stay in contact with me for the future.
I then interviewed Jennifer Cooper because she volunteered to help me after
hearing about my original work idea. Bailey Bowe volunteered to help me
later on because she realized the importance of her birthmark to her
identity and was willing to allow me to publicize it. Mr. Pirtle introduced me
to the idea to interviewing Kaci about her undiagnosed rosacea. And, I met
Melissa Duncan while shadowing Dr. Dharamsi at her Lewsville office.

Result/Conclusion

Although it was quite a length task, I was able to interview each of the
people for my magazine. I conducted my interview with Aidan, Jennifer,
Bailey, and Melissa in-person and I Face Timed Kaci. I was able to learn
about each persons unique insight into their treatments and the impact
their skin conditions have hand on their life. I have written the stories, but I
am currently in the process of editing my writing. The longest stories are
Aidans and Melissas because both of them have had the biggest experience
with skin conditions, while the other stories are slightly smaller due to the
difference in experience.

Photography Sessions

Objective

A magazine can have interesting content, but if it isnt appealing to the

audience, then the content can become ignored. In order to attract people to
my magazine, I decided to take professional-grade photos to add to my
magazine. The first photo shoot I took, was Jennifer Coopers. I also had her
send me pictures from the past when her face was penetrated with acne. I
then took pictures of Bailey Bowe at the Shops at Legacy. I took multiple
photos with different backgrounds, and then edited the pictures on my
MacBook Air. Afterwards, I took pictures of Aidan Moffett. I also took
Aidans pictures at the Shops at Legacy and edited the pictures after I came
home. I will also be using some of Aidans pictures from his time at Avene
and how his skin looked before he received treatment. Finally, I will be using
Melissa Duncans pictures from her Medical Records, with permission, in
order to display the before and after of all of her procedures.

Description of Process

To begin this project, I first had to decide on the types of pictures that I
wanted to use for my magazine, which includes landscape or portrait. After
deciding on the types of pictures that I would need, I went to different
locations with my featured people and took professional-grade pictures of
them to use in the magazine. I took multiple pictures for each shot because
of the possibility of getting pictures that did not turn out correctly due to
the specific moment the picture was taken. I asked the featured people for
their input on the pictures, so that I would be able to take pictures that best
represented who they are and I made sure to get proper lighting and quality
pictures that would reflect well on my final product.

Result/Conclusion
The results of the Photo Shoot were fantastic. The pictures turned out quite
well and were to the quality that I was hoping. There were many instances
where I thought that the photo shoots would not turn out well, but I was
amazed by how kind and professional each person was when I took their
photo shoot.

Create a Magazine

Objective

I decided on a magazine specifically because I realized that I would not have

enough content to fill up a book. The magazine would be more appealing to
audiences and it would contain information that was concise and inspiring.
Mr. Pirtle actually helped me come up with the idea of doing a magazine
instead of a book during one of our conferences because of the realistic
qualities to a magazine.

Description of Process

I first searched the Internet for sites to use to create a magazine. Through
my search, I was able to find two methods of creating the magazine: Blurb
and Canva. Due to my lack of superior creative ability, I decided to use
Canva because it includes more styles and options for the outline of the
magazine. Using Canva has not been the easy task, however, due to the
constant freezes and slow browser. But, overall the process has not been
too difficult with Canva.

Result/Conclusion
I have not yet completed this project, but I am currently working to get all of
my information finished and onto the templates that I have created. I have
organized the magazine in the most viewer-friendly way possible. My work at
this point stems on applying the stories to the templates and expanding
upon the ideas I have already come up with.

Distribution

Objective

A key motivation for choosing this original work, aside from my passion for
Dermatology, was the fact that my mentor was opening a practice in Frisco.
Because her practice will have a lobby in the front where patients will wait
before their check-up, I decided to work on a magazine that will alleviate
their wait time and give them something extra to do while they are waiting.
Thus, I will place this magazine in the waiting area of my mentors clinic
after it is completed.

Description of Process

After completing my magazine, I will give it to my mentor and ask her for her
wonderful insight to anything that needs to be improved or expanded upon,
and at her approval, I will place the magazine in her lobby on some of the
tables. This will allow for the patients to realize that the clinic cares about
each persons story and it will also increase my credibility.

Result/Conclusion
I have not yet completed this project, but I will consider it a success when I
have gotten feedback from my mentor and once I have actually placed it in
the lobby of my Mentors new clinic.
