The Sunday before Red Ribbon Week began, I volunteered at

Badillo Elementary School. I helped the Badillo PTA decorate the

school with red ribbons. Around the cafeteria we hung red tablecloths

and wrote the words Hugs not Drugs on the cloth. Around the gate

of the school we tied red ribbons to the fence in the shape of a bow.

We also used red solo cups on the gate and spelled out Red Ribbon

Week in the cups. The cups were very time consuming because the

fence holes were small and it was often difficult to fit the cups in the

small holes. This work was very tedious because I am not a very

creative person and therefore was not in my comfort zone.

This volunteering experience was rewarding because while

dropping my brothers off at school the following day, I saw the

decorations and the childrens reactions to them. Drug use is a very

prevalent problem in todays society and I find it very important to

educate our youth about the dangers of using drugs and how addictive

they are. Red Ribbon Week was very important to me when I was in

elementary school, making this service opportunity very significant for

me.
