I will use the Journey North Online Project in my classroom as a way for my students to
take a look at what migration looks like. For example, at this present moment, Monarch
Butterflies are in the migration progress from Mexico through the United States and
Canada. Students will record any time they see a Monarch Butterly over the course of two
weeks and as a class, we will record our data and use the Report Your Sightings feature
on Journey North to share our results and compare with neighboring schools in our area,
state, and surrounding states. Students will also have to make predictions and support
them, as to why they believe they got the results they did, and why their results might
differ from other classmates, and students in other schools. Students will also discuss why
migration is necessary for Monarch Butterflies, and why they migrate when they do.
Students will need their logs to record the number of Monarch Butterflies they spot and a
computer/tablet/ smartphone to report their results.

a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often
beyond their school: Students will be able to collaborate with their peers inside of
the classroom, in other classes and neighboring schools to compare their results
from their two weeks of investigation.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (collecting original data and or
producing original products as a result of engaging in the project): Students will
collect their own individual data on the number of butterflies they see and create
charts and graphs to show their individual results to share with classmates and
students outside of the classroom.
c. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their
product: After creating their charts and graphs to show their results, students will
publish their original data online to compare with students from around the
country also using Joourney North.
