beganasasequeltoTolkien's1937fantasynovelTheHobbit,buteventuallydevelopedintoamuchlarger
work.Writteninstagesbetween1937and1949,TheLordoftheRingsisoneofthebestsellingnovelsever
written,withover150millioncopiessold.[1]
Thetitleofthenovelreferstothestory'smainantagonist,theDarkLordSauron,[note1]whohadinanearlier
agecreatedtheOneRingtoruletheotherRingsofPowerastheultimateweaponinhiscampaigntoconquer
andruleallofMiddleearth.FromquietbeginningsintheShire,ahobbitlandnotunliketheEnglish
countryside,thestoryrangesacrossMiddleearth,followingthecourseoftheWaroftheRingthroughthe
eyesofitscharacters,notonlythehobbitsFrodoBaggins,Samwise"Sam"Gamgee,Meriadoc"Merry"
BrandybuckandPeregrin"Pippin"Took,butalsothehobbits'chiefalliesandtravellingcompanions:
theMenAragornsonofArathorn,aRangeroftheNorth,andBoromir,aCaptainofGondorGimlisonof
Glin,aDwarfwarriorLegolasGreenleaf,anElvenprinceandGandalf,aWizard.
TheworkwasinitiallyintendedbyTolkientobeonevolumeofatwovolumeset,theothertobeThe
Silmarillion,butthisideawasdismissedbyhispublisher.[3][4]ForeconomicreasonsTheLordoftheRingswas
publishedinthreevolumesoverthecourseofayearfrom29July1954to20October1955.[3][5]Thethree
volumesweretitledTheFellowshipoftheRing,TheTwoTowers,andTheReturnoftheKing.Structurally,the
novelisdividedinternallyintosixbooks,twopervolume,withseveralappendicesofbackgroundmaterial
includedattheendofthethirdvolume.Someeditionscombinetheentireworkintoasinglevolume.TheLord
oftheRingshassincebeenreprintednumeroustimesandtranslatedinto38languages.
