    The Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien between 1937 and 1949 that has sold over 150 million copies. It tells the story of hobbits Frodo Baggins and his companions as they try to destroy the One Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. The novel was originally intended to be one volume but was published in three parts from 1954 to 1955 due to economic reasons. It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages.
