Exploring the Role of Music in Secondary English and History
Classrooms through Personal Practice Theory by Christian Z. Georing and Bradley J. Burenheide published in the SRATE journal in the Summer of 2010 describes how music can be implemented into the classroom to help children learn. The article states that in order to understand how to use music in an educational manner, each teacher must first analyze their own teaching strategies - they call this personal practice theory. Through personal practice theory, each teacher considers their own beliefs, how they implement those beliefs in the classroom, and how their students learn from this. At the National Teachers Hall of Fame conference, they had the teachers answer those questions, and the teachers commonly answered that they wanted their students to be actively involved and connected in discussions. The teachers agreed that one of the best ways to do this is through the use of music.
The teachers found that music has enhanced their students
understanding of characters and settings, which has allowed for better analysis. It also gave the students an outlet to channel their inner thoughts and helped with introducing new topics. Music has allowed students to better understand different time periods, as music advances with the times. The article offers ways in which a teacher can introduce music into their classrooms. These ranged from students writing about events in their lives and putting music with it to arranging a song to play at the beginning of class and allowing students to guess how it would relate to the lesson of the day. Overall, the teachers at this conference agreed that implementing music into the classroom benefits the students learning in a great way.
