BFC21103 HYDRAULICS
Semester II Session 2016/2017

PROJECT: OPEN CHANNEL HUNT

Due: 1 April 2017 (Saturday 5:00 pm)

Instructions:
1. Create your own group maximum 5 members in one group.
2. Choose/hunt ANY four (4) drainage system (open channel: artificial channel/ natural channel/
swales), with length of 3-m. Find their Mannings coefficient, n value according to their
characteristics (Note: Find any text book, re-write the Mannings table in your report with the
reference detail).
3. Take photos of these channels and its location (Find their longitudinal and latitude coordinate).
No group in one course section is allowed to have the same channel for their project.
4. The project requires the estimation of uniform velocity V and rate Q of i) bankfull flow
(assumed maximum depth of flow) and ii) of their current water depth (if the channel is not
empty) based on Manning flow resistance equation, given as

where, V = uniform velocity of flow (m/s), n = Manning roughness coefficient (see Table 1), y
A
= normal depth of flow (m), R = hydraulic radius (m), A = area of flow (m2), P = wetted
P
perimeter (m), and So = longitudinal channel bed slope.
The rate of flow Q can be obtained from the continuity equation, i.e.

Q AV (2)
4. Although not very practical, students are suggested to consider only a 3-m uniform reach for
the estimation of the longitudinal slope, So. The channel geometries that lead to flow area,
wetted perimeter, and longitudinal slope are to be determined on-site at three (3) cross sections
of the channel, i.e. upstream, middle and downstream of the identified 3-m reach. Students are
free to choose from any available fundamental method to measure the channel geometries
and the longitudinal slope. These methodologies are to be reported.
5. Take a photo of each cross section location. Draw the cross section data using Microsoft
Excel/Word/Autocad based on their dimension (data measured) (Scale 1 cm : 0.25 m).
6. The selection of Manning roughness n is to be justified in the report.
7. Design the best hydraulics section for these channels that could convey flow at Q = 15.85 m3/s.

Report Writing and Presentation:

1. Format of report:
(a) Project report should be typed with 1.5 lines spacing, in 12-pt Times New Roman, printed
on A4-size papers with margins 2.5 cm on all four sides.
(b) The report should not exceed 20 pages (including photos). All pages (excluding cover and
list of content) should be numbered (centered at the bottom of the page).
2. Content of the report:
(a) Cover page with list of group members
(b) Project Assessment Rubric form
(c) List of content
(d) Main content:
1.0 Introduction provides descriptions and objectives of the project
2.0 Study Area information on channel location, surrounding environment and
channel characteristics and photos, date and time of measurements, on-site weather
observations, flow direction and other important information.
3.0 Methods and Equipments describes on the equipments, methods, equations used,
and other on-site activities.
4.0 Velocity and Discharge of Flow provides results of measurements (channel
geometries, flow area A, wetted perimeter P, longitudinal slope So, Manning
roughness coefficient n, velocity of flow V, and rate of flow Q).
5.0 Conclusions summary on the project including the learning outcomes (see
assessment rubric) and any recommendation.

3. Presentation of the project report is interview-based. During submission of the report, all
members of the group must be present and the instructor will pose questions to each member of
the group (see assessment rubric).

Note: Please refer to your instructor if any doubt arises during project implementation as assessment
is done by the instructor.
