Course Overview
Welcome to Mrs. Reeds Secondary Math I class. We are going to have a
great year. In the following document I will give you an idea of what you can
expect from me in my class this year as well as what will be expected of you.
Our curriculum for Secondary Math I is based on the Utah Core State
Standards. The purpose of Secondary Math I is to build upon the knowledge
acquired in Math 8. Through the course of the year we will deepen our
understanding of linear relationships as well as extend our understanding of
geometric knowledge from prior grades. We will also explore relationships
between geometric and algebraic concepts. We will be using the
Mathematical Practice Standards and well as the content standards to make
sense of mathematics in a way that is useful and allows for students to solve
real-world problems.
Attendance
You will be expected to present and attentive in class daily. In circumstances
in which you need to miss class a parent or guardian will need to excuse
your absence with the front office. Attendance and participation is part of
your grade, so please make an effort to be present. It is your responsibility
to check the What did I miss? folder for assignments that we did in class
while you were absent. You will have one week from the day you returned
back to class to complete and turn in the assignment for full credit. It is your
responsibility to ask me or classmate for missed notes and to clarify
anything that is confusing to you. The schools attendance and tardy policy
will be enforced. For information regarding the schools policy, please refer to
the student handbook.
Homework
Assigned homework in my class will be minimal. Generally, the only work
that will need to be taken home is work that is not finished in class. If
students use their time wisely in class then they will have more than enough
time to finish their work.
Late/Missed work
It is your responsibility to check the What did I miss? basket for
assignments that we did in class while you were absent. You will have one
week from the day you returned back to class to complete and turn in the
assignment for full credit. It is your responsibility to ask me or classmate for
missed notes and to clarify anything that is confusing to you.
If the class assignment was not finished in class and was taken home to be
finished, the student has ONE WEEK to complete and turn in the assignment.
After that the assignment is considered late and only worth half credit and
can be turned in up until ONE WEEK prior to the end of the semester. NO
EXCEPTIONS will be made.
Class Notes/Quizzes/Assessments
Class notes will be taken in the required composition book. Periodically there
will be notebook checks to make sure that students are keeping up with
notes and staying on task. Quizzes will be given every other week (and
possibly additionally as needed). Assessments will be given twice a term,
students will be given material to prepare.
Honesty and Cheating
There will be absolutely no cheating tolerated in my class. Any student who
is caught cheating or is found to be lying will receive a zero on the
assignment, quiz, or test. Students may work together on assignments if
given permission, however.
