by Skyler Bardon
Grade Level 3rd
Standards Addressed Language Arts:
CCSS.L.3.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of
standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when
writing.
Objectives Students will be able to:
1. Differentiate between meanings of its and its.
2. Use context clues to determine which form of spelling is
appropriate in a given sentence.
Materials Its Its handouts (1 for each student)
Lined paper (1 sheet for each student)
Pencils
Procedure 1. Begin by telling students that we will be doing a lesson similar to
the previous one focused on differentiating between to, too,
and two. This lesson will help them to determine the
difference between its and its.
2. On the promethean board, write the two forms of the word. Ask
the class if anyone can explain the difference between the two
spellings of the word.
3. Instruct as needed, guiding students to the realization that its
is a conjunction meaning it is and its is a possessive word
conveying a meaning of belonging.
4. Give each student a practice handout. Give students
approximately 10 minutes for completion.
5. If any students finish with time to spare, instruct them to check
over their work and study the spelling and meaning of each form
of the word. They may also create sentences of their own to
display the two forms on the back of their papers.
6. Go over the answers to the handout with the class. Allow
students to share their answers to each problem. Instruct
students to circle any answers that were incorrect.
7. Allow students to share any sentences they may have come up
with on their own.
8. Give students 2-3 minutes to study the two forms of the word
before their learning is assessed.
9. Collect all worksheets.
10. Prompt students to number their lined papers 1-5 down the left
side of the page, leaving space between each number to write
their sentences.
11. Read the following sentences aloud, giving students time to write
each down. Repeat the sentences as needed.
Its going to be a good day.
A bird made its home in a tree.
I know its good to always do my best.
Its fun to play with friends.
The dog thinks its fun to chase its tail.
12. Collect all assessments.
Assessment Students will be assessed upon their ability to use and spell correctly the
its and its in the sentences verbally relayed to them, as well as the
completion of their practice worksheets.
*Note: When looking over the sentences students have written, I will
also be marking all other errors made. I will use these errors to guide
further grammar and spelling instruction. This lesson was guided by
common errors found in previous lessons taught.
