The most important factors in the success or deterioration of English in the country
are the teachers and schools. Even the best curriculum and the most cooperative
and educated community will come to naught if the teacher is not capable of using
good English. Because of his day-to-day contact with his pupils, his spoken and
written English will be the spoken and written English of his pupils. The children,
owing to their limited experience, cannot discriminate between correct and wrong
English.

The most significant problem of the teachers in teaching English, according to the
findings of the study of the author, was the pupils poor background of knowledge in
English. It was also discovered that the pupils had poor or limited vocabulary.
Moreover, English was not spoken outside the classroom, thus, they had a feeling of
awkwardness in using the language.

Problems Encountered in the Teaching and Learning of English Recommendations:

To improve the spoken and written English of pupils and the teaching of English, the
following recommendations are offered:

ON TEACHERS COMPETENCE

1. Continued study is necessary for the advancement of teachers professional

standing and efficiency. Regular attendance of seminars and in-service training in
English such as series of demonstration classes and workshop conferences must be
conducted by grade levels in the district. Moreover, they should read professional
books and magazines to acquire insights and enrich their professional competence.
2. Teachers should develop skill in teaching English, the willingness to prepare a
wealth of instructional materials, a knowledge of the broad characteristics of the
pupils language and of English structure and a warm friendly attitude that will
counter balance the pupils lack of knowledge of the language.

3. Teachers should be encouraged to converse in English during meetings and

conferences. Likewise, programs and other social gatherings in schools should be
emceed in English.

4. All teachers should always speak English with their pupils anywhere at any time.

ON INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES

1. In imparting knowledge to the pupils, a combination of several methods and

techniques is highly commendable to produce the desirable end-products of
teaching.

2. English should be taught through varied and interesting methodology. The

presentation of materials should be at the pupils level.

3. To insure individualized instruction and active participation of every pupil in the

class activities, the enrolment should be limited to twenty to thirty pupils only per
class.

4. English teachers should devote more time to remedial teaching in English.

5. Teachers should create a relaxed atmosphere in their classes before beginning an

English period.

6. Every school and classroom should have an adequate supply of facilities

especially for English learning activities.
7. Mentors should never jump at their pupils every time they make mistakes, thus,
inhibiting their pupils from striving to use the language. Mistakes are best corrected
in concert drills.

8. It is advisable to conduct diagnostic tests at the beginning of the school year to

discover the weakness and special difficulties of children.

9. Schools should evaluate pupils records and provide remedial individualized

instructor, or other measures if these are deemed necessary for the success of the
English program.
