Civic Literacies Reflection

I enjoyed this section in the class. Civic literacy is an important part of our life, and in my

opinion, seems to be diminishing with our generation. Learning about the different aspects of

civic literacy, and exploring different examples, has been a useful, eye opening experience. One

assignment I enjoyed was the Civic Literacy Analysis. It was difficult to find an example of a

piece of civic literacy that I found interesting, and could analyze successfully. Through this

assignment, I developed my rhetoric knowledge and critical reading skills by carefully analyzing

civic texts. I also improved my knowledge of conventions when designing and creating my own

civic text as I had to incorporate many factors to make my text successful. Completing this

project allowed me to develop my literacy skills whilst simultaneously exploring a field I have

great interest in.

In the lead up to 2016 Presidential Election, campaigns encouraging people to vote started to pop up everywhere.

Many of these campaigns and advertisements targeted the common belief of my vote wont make a difference. Such

exigencies, especially the election we have just experienced, are important events that affect all of us, and are

covered, participated in, and spoken about, nearly all over the world. This opens a new world for firms when it

comes to campaigning and advertising. Whenever the public see, or read, about information regarding elections, it

is safe to say that there is a universal understanding of what said information is about. During election season, we

are bombarded with ads, commercials, and posters telling us to go out and vote for host of different reasons. These

messages become redundant and often ignored, resulting in an ineffective campaign. The particular poster that I

have chosen takes an unusual route in encouraging people to vote. Immediately we a presented with bold, colourful

words that exclaim dont vote. This is not the familiar instructions we are given when it comes it voting.
Along with the Personal Literacies Reflection, this reflection is helping me become a

better writer. I am forced to look at my own writing and evaluate my strengths and weaknesses to

determine how to improve my writing in the future. These reflections have directly had a positive

impact on the development of my critical reflection skills.

To conclude, this has been my favorite topic that we have covered in class. It has allowed

me to develop multiple useful skills and explore further into the area I am interested in
