Persopolis

1. Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The war that is discussed in our class notes is heavily shown in Persepolis. Through our

main character Marjanes eyes, we see a world of war unfold. Her family is forced to

follow strict rules and heavy observation, all while being moved around and feeling

scared for their well being.

2. Find a related article and summarize the content.

Scott, A.O. "Persepolis - Movies - Review." The New York Times. The New York Times,

25 Dec. 2007. Web. 22 Apr. 2017.

This article written by A.O. Scott critiques the film, and praises how the creators of the

film went with French voice actresses and subtitles for its initial release. This choice

helps make the film seem much more genuine and hits with a more powerful impact.

A.O. focuses on Marjane, her mother, and her grandmother when discussing characters

from the film, deeming all three of them to be very important to the film.

3. Apply the article to the film screened in class.

This article made me think about the film once more to try to figure out the importance of

the adults surrounding Marjane in the film. Her mother and grandmother definitely shine

as role models and help set the path for her future. Marjane finds help understanding the

situations through her family, and finds support from them in the face of difficult times.

This is a very big theme in the film, and definitely makes more sense to me now.

4. Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result

of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.

Persepolis was a very powerful and touching film, filled with emotion and fear. Marjanes
world changes very quickly and very intensely through out the film, and it really left me

with a perspective of how life can be in their country and culture. The piece of the film

where Marjane turns to music and the punk rock culture struck a chord with me, as I

found myself in that same place of rebellion. It made me happy to see it presented in the

film and was definitely my favorite piece. Overall, the film was most definitely a genuine

work of art by its animators and writers, and is definitely an important film.
