Geometry Round Table Overview

This year we have covered a variety of topics in Geometry that dealt with spacial relationships
both in 2-D and in 3-D. You have an option to choose one of the following two projects.

Go Green with creating a Candy Carton

A candy company wants you to design a carton that will contain 18 candies.

Benchmark Outline:
Your design must take into account the following:
The candies are each 1 cm deep and 2 cm in diameter. (Mentos)
The carton must be made from a net that fits on a single sheet of letter-sized
cardboard.
The design should require as little cutting as possible.
The sides of the carton will be fixed together using glue flaps.
Show where these will be on your net.
Produce two possible designs for nets of the candy carton.
Compare your two designs.
Record in writing which carton you think is best and why.

Geometry Candy Carton Project

Comparison:
The project is to make two candy carton design that would fit 18 mentos that are each 1
cm deep and 2 cm in diameter. Which volume formula is V=4/3abc(abc represents
each of the radius)=4/3*1*0.5*1=2.09cm^3. Since we need 18 candies in the carton,
we times it by 18 and we get 37.62cm^3. Therefore it takes up 37.62cm^3 space in the
carton and it could even take up more than 18 mentos.

Here are the two caron designs that were going to use for the candy, both of them are
rectangular prism. Therefore we need to find both shapes Surface Area. The first
designs length, width and height are: 18, 2 and 2; the design is longer but less wide
than the second design. The second designs length, width and height are: 9, 2 and 4
which has a greater height but shorter length than the first design.

First designs surface area SA=2ab+2bc+2ac=152cm^2

Second designs surface area SA=2ab+2bc+2ac=124cm^2

Which Carton Is Better?

These are the two designs me and my partner came up with, it would be hard to
compare if you just look at its Surface Area and the net, however we can see the
difference from its length and height. In the first design, its 18cm and the second is
9cm.We think design 2 is better and it uses less material than the first design because
of a longer length, a square lid/cover could bring out 1 mentoes while a rectangular lid
could provide more mentos. The Rectangle Prism carton makes a rectangular lid
therefore the wider rectangular prism is less material than the square lid of the longer
rectangular lid. Also by comparing the Surface Area of the two designs, designs 2 saved
over 28cm^2 worth of paper and which shows design 2 candy carton is more economic.
Design1: Length: 18cm, Width: 2 cm and Height: 2cm.
Design 2: Length: 9 cm, Width: 2cm and Height:4 cm.
