Cyclohexylamine as corrosion Inhibitor

Cyclohexylamine is a strong organic base stronger than ammonia and the

ethanolamines. It combines with carbon dioxide to form an amine bicarbonate, in which state the
former is rendered non-corrosive to metals. Since the amine is more strongly basic than carbonic
acid is acidic, the solution of the amine bicarbonate formen when chemical equivalents of the
two are mixed is not neutral but slightly alkaline (pH 8.1).
Cycloheylamine is recommended to be added to the system in sufficient quantity to
maintain the condensate at a pH of 8.5. Cyclohexylamine should preferably be introduced into
the water system as a continuous addition rather as a shock dose.

Mechanism of cyclohexylamine as corrosion inhibitor

Cyclohexylamine prevent corrosion with neutralizing carbon dioxide and make
amine film. Cyclohexylamine is added into the feed water, the addition of these amine adjusts
the pH of the feed water into the range between 8 to 10 which is optimum for a mixed metallurgy
system to avoid corrosion. As these added cycloheylamine passes into the boiler, they are also
distributed into the steam and condense with the steam and carbon dioxide. Apart from
neutralizing amines which inhibit the corrosion by controlling the condensate pH, filming amines
are being used in steam condensate treatment. Filming amines form water repellant films upon
metal surfaces inhibiting the corrosion process further by preventing the metals from contacting
with the corrosive substances such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of aniline at elevated temp and pressures.
Fractionation of crude reaction product yields cyclohexylamine, unchanged aniline, and high-
boiling residue containing n-phenylcyclohexylamine (cyclohexylaniline) and dicyclohexylamine.
