A Just Society

Vince Lombardi once said, Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what

makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. about the

success of his teams while coaching football. I would compare a just society to the

perfect football team. In every aspect of a football team, each player knows their

position to play. Likewise, in every aspect of society, each member knows their role and

fulfills it. This essay will outline that when organized proficiently, every part of an

organization can be perfect enough to define and create a just society. A just nation is

possible not through its inventive technology or efficient systems, but through the efforts

of its nation.

The beginning factor of a just nation is its government and laws. A fair civilization

does not give one individual all power but gives all power to the group. As a whole, and

in true republican democracy fashion, the people make decisions needed to efficiently

govern people. The governing body should have no single person in charge. Like a

football team, the head coach exists with other coaches over specific aspects of the

game. Laws and policies are also ultimately decided by the members, after careful and

deliberate organizing by elected representatives and not one person. The best

coach(es) know the game and how to make the best plays possible. The same should

apply to the government, who knows how to govern the public and only in the best way

possible. A just state would follow the advice given by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his
speech, The Four Freedoms, given to the 77th Congress in 1941. Whether in war or

social setting, congress and government taking action and being active in taking care of

society should be the greatest mission of the government. In the speech he states, Our

strength is our unity of purpose. and rightly looks to the government first to be unified.

A just organization also effectively implements and advocates the rights of all people,

citizen or foreign. As expressed during the time of Japanese concentration camps, That

Damned Fence, argues that the rights and liberties of all humans will be the

governments first priority. The government of a fair civilization does its job, to govern

people, with all morality, efficiency, and purpose of serving the whole.

Another factor that should ultimately serve the community is the culture's

economy and health policy. If an economy had levels of social class, worked to benefit

the richest, or only existed to make money off the people, then civil disobedience in a

just society would be encouraged. As defined by Henry David Thoreau, civil

disobedience is acting against the norms when the laws/economy/culture in place is not

right with the rest of humanity. A just economy has no social class, no high taxes or

tariffs, no markup, no debt, and the community as a whole works to give all members

what they need. In a football team, both equity and equality can be applied. The better

you play, simply working for pay, then the more your needs are provided. However, no

one player gets more water or food beyond their need and the needs of others are not

disregarded to give another more. In addition to getting appropriate and equal

pay/resources, when a player gets injured the whole team is affected. Like the saying

that a racing team is only as good as its slowest runner so is society only as good as
those least provided for. When only a part of the people's health is being taken care of,

the whole nation is affected. A just world looks out for all types, states, and forms of

people before moving to progress.

One crime that is preventing society from becoming a decent one is the continual

allowance of injustice. The inequality in our schools, jobs, and culture as a whole has

become nationwide cancer that is never fully healed. An honest community gives an

opportunity to all people. In education, it provides quality and free access to knowledge.

An injustice that has continued for decades is that society gives more (money, attention,

etc.) to celebrities and unskilled politicians than to teachers or intelligent people of any

field. An honest people gives credit to those that matter, those who seek to make the

public better beyond the limits of entertainment. As Martin Luther King Jr. stated in his

Letter to Birmingham, Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. his

argument stays true today. Injustice in schools is still injustice; injustice in unknown

neighborhoods is still injustice; injustice to those we dislike is still injustice. Not giving a

player play time because his eyes are green is a crime against justice; a lack of

sportsmanship in the game is still a crime against justice. A just nation works to give all

players an opportunity to help people excel, not just a single person.

The football team with the greatest record and has the best standing is the team

that plays the best with each other. A just society is a society that is not only successful

in its relationships and ties with people but only improves as time goes on. A just society

is a society whose governing body and laws aim to serve the people. A just society is a

society whose economy provides honorable equity and equality to all, where the health
of the people matters more than riches. A just society is a society that educates its

people on the foundation of justice and morality.
