WHAT IS INDEPENDENT STUDY MENTORSHIP

Independent Study Mentorship is a collegiate level course for students who are wanting to have hands on
experience in a field of work. The students in the program have a mentor for the course of a semester. They
shadow them at their work place to gain information about their selected topic and other information the
student learns. Within the class we have multiple assignments to help us get to our final project, and things that
allow us to better understand our selected profession

WHY THIS TOPIC
I chose this topic because its something that I personally dealt with and I know its something that a lot of parents/
guardians have to deal with. Below is a picture of a brain storming activity that we did in class to think of ideas go do
our project over.

EAR ANATOMY
WHAT IS AN EAR INFECTION?

An ear infection (acute otitis media) is most often a bacterial or viral infection that affects
the middle ear, the air-filled space behind the eardrum that contains the tiny vibrating bones
of the ear. (6)
Roughly 75% of children will have an ear infection (2)

CURRENT EVENT
FULL COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS IS BEST FOR INFANT EAR INFECTIONS, STUDY FINDS

Most of the time the child is on antibiotics for 10 days because the body often builds up drug-resistant bacteria to
the antibiotics.
For the study done by Dr. Doland H. Arnold, he used 520 babies from age 6 to 23 months old, who had middle-
ear infections. It's common that a doctor will prescribe amoxicillin combined with clavulanate.
They saw that of the babies failed the 5 day treatment compared with the 16% of the 10 day group.
While still conducting the study they saw 44% of babies who had a double ear infection didn't get better within 5
day of treatment compared to the 25% of those given the antibiotics for 10 day.
The study did show that the amount of duration of the antibiotics didn't result in less bacteria resistance. (5)
OTITIS MEDIA WITH EFFUSION

Otitis media with effusion is fluid in the middle ear without any signs or symptoms of having the build up (1)
Common reasons for the buildup is allergies, irritants, respiratory infections, drinking laying down, air pressure
changes (1)
if fluid is present without the sign of infection it might be otitis media with effusion, if infection is present its a
case of Acute otitis media (1)

ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA EAR INFECTIONS
For acute the most common symptoms are severe ear achy, fever, flue like symptoms, hearing difficulties(2)
Acute needs antibiotics while effusion does not(2)
commonly started from bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenza, and Moraxella catarrhalis(1)
AOM virus starters are respiratory syncytial virus, rhinoviruses, influenza viruses, and adenoviruses(1)
AOM mild case may fade after 2-3 without antibiotics, if not better they might need the antibiotics (1)
If the child has serve AOM antibiotics are recommended right away, Doctor will be able to tell you the difference(1)
Some ways the child might get the infection is because of daycare attendance,
drinking a bottle laying down, fall and winter, and exposer to pollutions or smoke (1)
Acute ear infections can have a small duration time while chronic may occur many times
and cause damage (4)
Occurs when the Eustachian tubes are swollen or blocked so fluid fields up (4)

CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS

Chronic ear infection is fluid, swelling, or an infection behind the eardrum that does not go away or keeps
coming back, and causes long-term or permanent damage to the ear(12)
Chronic ear infection may be less noticeable than acute (4)
the doctor may collect a simple to run test to figure out what type of bacteria is present, they might want to do
a head computed tomography to see if the infection has spread, and if its a chronic ear infection a hearing test
may be done (4)
