Project- Based Learning

Flipped Classroom Assignment

You have just completed a unit of study on photosynthesis in your biology class. You feel really

great about being able to explain to your family the details of how plants use carbon dioxide

from the atmosphere for the process of photosynthesis and release oxygen. However, you hear

so much about increased in carbon dioxide and increases in global temperatures. You are not sure

how these are related or what effect it has in your life.

You decide to investigate this further by answering these questions:

How is carbon dioxide related to global warming?

Do you think people's actions are causing global warming?
Explore some examples of the consequences of a prolonged rising temperature of the

earth.
Examine why/how rising temperatures of the earth are a problem.

After researching the questions, you feel like you have a good idea about global warming. You

decide to:

Option 1:
Capstone Deliverables 25

Write a letter regarding this issue to one of the individuals that represent you in the U.S.

Congress. You want to Tell them how you feel about this issue and what you believe should be

done about it. Be sure to:

Cite examples that relate specifically to your community.

Point to the individuals previous voting record on relevant issues.

Find their office address and use the appropriate greeting including title and business

letter format.

Option 2:

You decide you want to be a part of the change: Look around your community or school and

identify an action that you can take that will contribute to reducing the effects of global warming.

It does not need to be a big action. Develop a plan regarding the action. Contact community

leaders, administration, family members, and/ or school board members to help you make the

change.

Click on this link to learn more about your issue and how to take action: Your America:

Take action resources

Option 3:

Make a very educational video about the issue of global warming. Be sure to use credible and

verified data. You can choose to enter your video in the CSPAN student Cam Project.
Capstone Deliverables 26

See these examples: Requiem for the Honeybee from Charles Greene

See Schoology for links to resources on Global Warming and related topics.

Traditional Classroom Research Project

You will research the topic of global warming and write 5-8 page research paper.Your paper

should be clearly and simply written using your own words and should be well documented. That

means it should be based on research, should be footnoted (using any of the standard citation

formats), and there should be a bibliography.

Your audience will be your fellow classmates. Keep in mind you are addressing students

that have a basic knowledge of the subject

The paper should describe what global warming is, how do humans impact global

warming, what effects does it have on earths inhabitants, what could be done to reduce

global warming and all the facts behind it, perhaps a little of its history, and what the

situation means to the different parties involved. You can include other relevant topics to

enrich your research.

End your paper with your recommendations for what should be done in the future to

address global warming. Your recommendation has to be clear, specific, and measurable.
Capstone Deliverables 27

Provide references for your ideas within your paper (Without including these connections

your paper will be considered incomplete and will not earn a passing grade).
There is not minimum or maximum for the paper. It is expected that you research all

required information and write a research paper that coherently ties in all the information.
Project Self Evaluation by completing a self- evaluation of your research that follows.

Self- Evaluation of Research Global Warming

Complete this self-evaluation while you conduct your research project. The criteria here will be

used to evaluate you using a teacher rubric. It will benefit you if you are through ad honest in

your self-evaluation.

Post Assessment

The expected outcome of the flipped classroom model is to provide students with a more

active learning environment in class and free class time for more discussion and

clarification of content for students. Providing students with higher level work in class that

requires students to synthesis, analyze and evaluate information should increase problem

solving and critical thinking skills. The questions on this post assessment require students

to think critically and solve problems. This is used to evaluate student achievement in this

area.
