Lesson Plan

Brittany Barnum
Edu. 201
Lesson plan: Parts of Speech and Morals of the story

Grade level: 3

Suggested group size: 5 groups of 4 students

Subject: English and Literature

Standard:

Speaking and listening standards for third graders (page 43 #2): determine the main ideas and
supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats,
including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

Conventions of Standard English (page 50): Demonstrate command of the conventions of

Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Explain the function of nouns,
pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general and their functions in particular sentences.

Objective: Students should be able to identify all adjectives, pronouns and verbs and adequately
recall the moral of the story to explain to their peers

Materials needed:

-5 different fables

-Four copies printed for each fable

-Pencils

Procedure:

1. Read the directions to the students: Highlight all the adjectives, underline the pronouns
and circle the verbs. Each group must decide on a moral of the short story to teach to the
class. Every student must speak when it is your groups turn to present. Remind the
students what adjectives, pronouns and verbs are. (we studied parts of speech already so
you are just refreshing here.)

2. Separate the students into their groups of four. I have pre-separated them for you to help
even out the groups better:

Group 1: Shelby, Taylor, Simon, and Jacob

Group 2: Delaney, Malia, Ethan, and Brooklyn

Group 3: Deliliah, Carter, Jena, and Tristan

Group 4: Parker, Hope, Riley, and Lorenzo

Group 5: Liam, Taylor, Xander, and Giavanna

3. Give each group a different short story and allow them to start working in their groups with
their inside voices. Allow 15-20 minutes for this section depending on them. (The 5 stories
are: the spotted cow, The Fortune and the Beggar, the story of the Wise Woman, Will the
Wolf, and The swift Runner) When they are all finished bring them back to the center for
presentations.

4. Collect their papers with their group number on it before they take their turn their turn so
you can make notes on their paper about the understanding of the moral of their short
story.

5. Call on each group to share. Each member of the group must talk. On the groups paper
note if the moral of the story was correct and if the overall group had an understanding of
the story.

Assessments:

The worksheet will be collected to grade on their identifying the parts of speech as well as their
understanding of the story. The students will also be speaking out loud the moral of the story.
The total for this assignment will be 25. 5 allotted for understanding the story and 20 for
understanding parts of speech.
