This is as scholarly source that gives a general overview of the history of censorship being used

in societies and governments and the pros and cons of having it. The author, who is a freelance

writer and professor at Mohawk Valley Community College in Sociology, gives an overview of

major events in history where censorship played a big role of the outcome and process that was

taken and shares where it is necessary to apply censorship. Censorship dates back to the Roman

censor office in 443 BCE which was in charge of shaping how the Roman people were supposed

to act in society and how they shaped people. This is important for the origin of censorship and

how it was used over history. Some other recent events were the USSR which subjected the

population to spying and censorship laws which ended up leading to imprisonment and murder

of many citizens. The author uses these examples to show the abuse of censorship and how it can

apply to events in modern day that have been used as an excuse to enforce censorship laws.
Overall I thought the information was reliable and helps with a general overview and intro to

each perspective of how censorship should be controlled and when should information be public

knowledge or not. The purpose of this information is to inform a general audience of the

background of censorship and how it plays a role in current society today. I think this source was

helpful and will be including it in my essay.

Newth, Mette. The Long History of Censorship. The Long History of Censorship, 2010,

The author of this reliable website focuses on how censorship has taken a change over the years

and has played a role in societies. He uses examples of 18th century Europe around the time of

the first independent press. They describe the strict censorship laws and how they have taken a

change over the centuries and how people had to fight for more knowledge to be open to the

public and the ways they got it. I think that this overall is a reliable source and that the author is

credible since he presents his arguments from both sides and gives some background on the

situation instead of just taking one side of the matter. I will be using this in my essay.

Walsh, Bryan. The Right to Speech Vs. the Right to Censor. Time, Time,

This popular source from Time magazine looks at how censorship is applied to situations where

people with power suppress those they disagree with. He argues from the point of view that

censorship has been over abused to almost completely get rid of debate in society and have

polarized viewpoints. An example the author uses in this article is the comment made by Milo
Yiannopoulos and what happened to him and his career afterwards. While what he said was

completely out of line, it does show how powerful censorship can be and what it can do to those

who are on the side controlling censorship. The author also argues a lot about how free speech

has been under attack more than ever and how the governments, companies, and groups on

college can abuse censorship to only allow what they agree with to be filtered through.

Overall, I think that this source was reliable and gives a point of view from the side of how

censorship can be abused by others and doesnt allow for equal view of different points on

certain issues we face in society. This also gives me perspective to what others think so I can

inform both sides of the argument which is my goal of this essay. The purpose of this article is to

persuade I believe because the author takes a strong stance on the side of censorship is being

abused and how it has made free speech very robust today. This is targeted to generally anyone

who wants to be informed and is trying to see a different perspective or gain insight on an

opinion. I think this article will shape how I see censorship in a bad light a little bit since this is

the main theme of the article and what the author is trying to persuaded across. I dont think this

source will appear in my article because I think it will influence my opinion too much and not

allow for me to discuss both sides equally.

The author of this Scholarly article received a Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the

University of Missouri. He currently owns a small business in law practice and gives research

and writings focusing primarily on censorship and first amendment rights violations. He has
written numerous academic articles providing arguments for and against censorship and his

reasonings for the limitations of each. In this article, he talks from the perspective of the

necessity of censorship and the good it can provide for society. He focuses on censorship in areas

such as military secrets and why it is routinely censored for society. In general, not many people

are opposed to censorship for if there wasnt any, it could cause wide spread panic and

psychological harm.

Another point that the author makes is the need for censorship of classified information in a time

of war. If military were just openly let out to the public, then they would also be leaked to our

enemies during this time and what would be the point of even developing strategies. This shows

while censorship may need to be limited, in certain situations such as war it proven to be needed

in order to safeguard our country and its people. Another case where censorship is needed under

certain circumstances is sexual assault victims and juvenile crimes. These are scenarios where

not censoring this information can cause more than good by damaging the person

psychologically and even socially. The author shows numerous times scenarios where censorship

is needed and how its harmful effects outweigh any benefit. While censorship can be over abused

and should be limited, there are reasons for it and it can sometimes prevent unnecessary harm.

So, in conclusion, I think this author is credible and reliable in his argument. He provides

numerous examples and reliable sources including statistics to back up his claims and solidify

why there is a need for censorship. This article will make a great source for my counter argument

showing why there is a necessity for censorship.

Overall, I thought your Annotated Bibliography was written well-written. I thought that you

cited your sources very well and explained them in a very great manner. The improvement that I

feel should be made in in you formatting. The format of an MLA style annotated bibliography is
very The date in the heading should be in [Day Month Year] formatting. Also, all of your MLA

cited sources should being formatted using a hanging indent. I feel like your work and research

was excellent. Just if you put a little bit more attention to detail into the formatting and rules of

MLA, then this would be an excellent annotated bibliography.
