Standards:

2.1.a. By the end of grade 9, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and
poems, in the grades 910 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the
high end of the range. (CCSS: RL.9-10.10)
2.2.b. Analyze in detail how an authors ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular
sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text (e.g., a section or chapter). (CCSS: RI.9-10.5
2.2.d. Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the
order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the
connections that are drawn between them. (CCSS: RI.9-10.3)

Goals:
Students will read and understand Act 2 of Romeo and Juliet.
Students will work together to act out scenes 3-5.
Students will listen to the audiobook for scene 6 and use the technology to better understand
the text.
Students will write and perform a modern translation for scene 2.
Students will write a summary for Act 2.

Objectives:
By the end of this unit students will be able to:
Recall the events from Act 1 and connect them to the events occurring in Act 2
Summarize Act 2
Use their close reading skills to interpret Shakespeares language
Analyze and discuss Act 2
Write a modern translation of a scene by determining the major events and
communication within that scene
Evaluate the major points in individual scenes and be able to explain the significance to
the rest of the class
